From the obscurity of dozens of California bar bands and nightclubs to the heights of some of the most prestigious concert venues worldwide, Neal Morse recounts the events that led him though the maze of musical, personal and spiritual experiences that shaped his life. Starting from his first musical endeavors as a child, Neal bears his soul as he recalls the pitfalls, heartaches and temptations along his journey.
This hard-hitting, inspirational exposé takes the reader from Neal’s club days to the formation of Spock’s Beard and from the rigors of musical and personal burnout to the wondrous joy of spiritual fulfillment and purpose. The book spans approximately 230 pages in paperback form, and includes photos from all stages of Neal’s life.
When one listens to the beautiful, tormented, honest, and compelling progressive music of Neal Morse, your curiosity is piqued in wonder: "where did he find the inspiration, much less the training to compose such works of art?" In his autobiography, Testimony, Neal recounts his youth in a hyper-creative family, his explorations through the counter-culture realm, and long forays into the world of the struggling muse in a material world.
With crisp detail and astonishment, he looks back on the many pitfalls and challenges of his life (many of his own making), as well as the joys and triumphs of his family, spiritual journey, and musical career that are still blossoming. While many others would have given in to complacency or sold-out to easier commercialism in their mid-life, Neal Morse continues to soar ever-higher, taking us into the heavens with him. For anyone seeking the source of their creativity, Testimony will serve as invigoration as well as showing the peace that comes through brokenness and surrender.
— Mark Hollingsworth (Author of Embracing the Gray; former manager of Sixpence None the Richer, Steve Taylor, Petra, and Smalltown Poets)
Not only is Neal Morse one of my favorite musicians and song- writers of all time, but he is also one of my favorite people in the world. And besides being a great musical companion to me for over 10 years and as many albums, he’s been a dear friend and a hugely positive influence on my life. His music has touched and inspired so many around the world, and now his story will as well.
— Mike Portnoy
The Stevie Wonder of Prog tells all!
—Paul Gilbert
Neal is one of the few musicians that I know, who can put his music in perspective: it is a reflection of his life and spirituality. If you live life with a higher calling, your music will reflect a higher point of view.
— Steve Morse
More than anyone else that comes to mind (with the possible exception of my parents) Neal has influenced my life in many positive ways, by simply working with and being around him. Over the years and without consciously trying, he’s led me to many breakthroughs both personally and professionally just by example or by revealing his unique insight and perspective on things. Perhaps this book, his story written in his words, can do the same for you.
— Dave Meros
It is hard to fathom anybody who has as complete a mastery of his own gifts as does Neal Morse. Proficient instrumentalist, incisive singer/songwriter, inventive arranger, compelling worship leader and brilliant conceptual architect…Morse accomplishes all of these things with a dexterity that is thrilling yet with a humility that inspires personal reflection and a search for truth.

uplifting, candid, and hope-filled look at God's shaping of a broken man
By Emerson
I first of have to say this: YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK! It's extremely well written, the content strikes a chord deep within you, and the background info on this man's musical lanscape will captivate you the entire way through.
I will say that I am a huge "prog-head" or whatever we call ourselves these days. I also am a prog musician, and a huge Beard, Neal Morse, and Dream Theater fan. (countless others too but you guys want to know about the book) so I guess it's a no-brainer that I bought this. As both a prog fan and a Christian myself I feel both led and also blessed to support my Christian musician brothers in their endeavors. I remember the first time that I listened to the Testimony CD... wow! Like Mike Portnoy describes at just that one point where it IS the whole moment of everything in one shot. It left me sitting there just vibrantly alive and yet in tears... This book did the same.
This book also served to remove some scales from my own eyes. It startled me in fact how many paralells I see in my own life. I have been in many ways forcing my own life. I do not share in common with Neal the substances and womanizing issues but I came through these words to see that God was not in control of my life, but only because I just refused to unharden my heart, and just let God do what he wills for us. I just cant seem to let go of the steering wheel and let God drive... I HAVE to be in control or I'll crash right? Wrong! I bet that's something we probably ALL do. I gained valuable insight on this, and after finishing this review plan on hitting the carpet face down, and letting go of that ball of anger, darkness, and flat out pride.
Thank you Neal for sharing this story, and to Paul
also... GREAT WORK
One last note, This was read over a Kindle and other than the cover picture, no other pictures came through... Kinda sad that I missed out on them, may have put things into a more revealing light at times, however I still would keep the highest rating, as the story was more than worth it. Plus we are all adults right? Do we still NEED pictures in our books at our age? But I guess they still should look into that.

If you want to know about Neal Morse then read this
By Scychry
So far I really like what I've heard from Neal Morse musically (including the first six Spock's Beard CD's and Transatlantic) though I haven't heard all his stuff yet. Concerning this book it was a great read. Maybe I'm biased because I like to read behind the scenes stuff about musicians/bands that I like.
He tells of his conversion to Christianity. It seemed like a process. He had some experiences that were leading him there. Morse says that while in Spock's Beard he began writing lyrics about this but changed subtle things in those words so they weren't blatantly about Jesus and about what was happening to him. He even used pronouns like "she" in his songs when he really meant "he." And this was not just on the Snow CD but on others before that. He gives examples.
(I'm nitpicking here but he says when he was a kid in 1973 he was in a car and Afternoon Delight was playing. That song wasn't even recorded until late 1975.)
Ok, that's a minor detail. The book is a great read for anyone interested in knowing about Neal Morse, his music, and his conversion.

Ever Wondered.....
By A. GORHAM
Although I was a bit late to the progressive rock party, I've consistently been drawn towards Spock's Beard and Neal Morse. I've always wondered why Neal made the decisions that he did to leave the band and start his own group and this book helped me put that decision into perspective. Ultimately though what I really liked was Neal's honesty and openness to his past and his future. Great stuff that!
