Fans of Patterson's serial-killer hunting detective, Alex Cross, expecting another cat-and-mouse thriller based on this book's title, will find Cross's appearance limited to a two-page preface in which the fictional character explains why he's written a book called Trial. Abraham Cross, a relative who lived in Eudora, Miss., at the beginning of the 20th century, helps liberal lawyer Ben Corbett to expose the truth about a wave of lynchings near that town, an assignment undertaken at the request of Corbett's friend, President Theodore Roosevelt. When Corbett arrives in Eudora, where he was born and raised, he receives a frosty reception from many unhappy with his record of representing African-Americans accused of murder, including a cold shoulder from his father, a judge. Soon, Corbett finds evidence that racism is alive and well, and that brutal murders of blacks, often for the most trivial of reasons, are endemic. Some may be disappointed that Abraham plays a relatively minor role, given the jacket line that "the Cross family had more than one hero."

BEWARE--Not really an Alex Cross book

In typical Patterson style, this book was a very easy and fast read: the chapters are short, the font is large, and the descriptive text is kept to a minimum. That pretty much sums up the good qualities of the book. Patterson should be ashamed of himself titling this book Alex Cross's Trial. This is clearly a marketing ploy to lure in unsuspecting Alex Cross fans. The first two pages are about Alex Cross and he is not mentioned again in the entire 380 pages. The book is really about lynching in the South in the early 1900s. There aren't any twists and turns in the plot to keep the reader riveted and the conclusion is absolutely non-climatic. A real disappointment.

Painful Vision of Past Injustice

Trying to read Patterson's books in order but this is a bizarre deviation. Dark and ugly story about a bad time in a segregated south when, according to the book, blacks were attacked, beaten or hung for even minor offenses like standing up for themselves. Cross wrote this to settle some guilt over some family history, apparently. It is a horrible story and one that doesn't need the benefit of his story-telling mastery. It is still an ugly story and one that I couldn't finish. I'm not sure how it helps to keep dredging up the past like this but some of us would prefer to look to the future.

A very holding story line. Realistic, shows the hate and disrespect showered on the Blacks by ignorant people. This story brought to life what bigots were really like. Show no respect for humans that were seen as no better than animals. Animals were treated better. No matter what proof was presented it was disregarded.

Great book for Christian women

This book is practical and inspirational. Written by a mentor and her merea ("Mah-RAY-ah," one she mentored), this interactive Bible study has really inspired me. I love the humorous ARNF's at the end of each chapter (Always Remember and Never Forget!). My husband and I have laughed at those often. This book will help those who hesitate to mentor because they don't know what to do, or don't feel qualified to guide another in her spiritual walk. The book has a great group guide if a group of mentors want to discuss what they've learned in this bookand/or through their mentoring relationships. It also includes an inspirational commissioning service at the end, for a church group to use as a formal way of dedicating members to mentor others. While written for women, it can be used by men. The writers must work well together. They have done an excellent job of touching the heart.. I highly recommend it. It will make you laugh and cry--and teach you how to take others under your wing and show them what you've learned from your experience in life.

Don't Bother

While the subject matter is there, the only reason to download this version, other than it is free, is that it says it has the illustrations by DuLac. It doesn't. Nor does it have any TOC or pagination. Spend another buck or two, and get one that does!

My old standby

I discovered the Rubaiyat when I was a junior in high school many decades ago. I stumbled on it in a poetry book our English teacher made us read. I took that book with me through four years in the military. I read it in the cockpits of KB-50s, on Wake Island beaches, and kept a copy wherever I went in the world. When times got really dark for me, Omar poked a hole through it all and let in enough light to get me through. I won't say it is my bible but, for me, it clarifies everything. Some people say it is anti-religion and too obsessed with drinking and "living for the moment", but they obviously haven't read the quatrains about the pottery and the potter. There is a basic truth to the Rubaiyat that I turn to in dark times. I have copies on all my computers, iPads, iPhones, iPods, in my office and in my libraries. When I get tense or geared up for a big transaction, I'll read a few of my favorite quatrains, calm down, and try to enjoy the experience. Omar has been there through deaths, divorces, illnesses, and failures. For me this is a five-star read and the book is a steal.

An Excellent Companion Gift!

I bought this book, along with the Rainstick Kit (available in Toys). It was a Christmas gift for a friend's child. She was able to read the book to learn about rainsticks. At the end of the book, it gave her instructions to make her own rainstick and she also make one from the Rainstick Kit. The story in the book was beautifully told and the pictures and colors were breathtaking. This is an excellent gift idea for someone who likes to both read and do. It is educational and fun and is a great gift idea!

I microscopic print of one of the best philosophical texts ever

The work itself is inarguably the best version of Lucretius, and that would be an automatic 5 stars. Unfortunately, the size of the thing is so small, it borders on being a prank. It's 5x7" and the text appears 3-4pt font, which is barely larger than a pharmaceuticals insert you get with medicine. It really seems like Oxford University Press is telling us all, "we have the best of the best in Latin, and we're the only source, so we can totally give you the middle finger, and you'll still be back for more. So go buy a magnifying glass and shut up about it." The size of this book is an insult to the reader.
