Of the People: A Concise History of the United States, Second Edition, not only tells the history of America--of its people and places, of its dealings and ideals--but it also unfolds the story of American democracy, carefully marking how this country's evolution has been anything but certain, from its complex beginnings to its modern challenges. This comprehensive survey focuses on the social and political lives of people--some famous, some ordinary--revealing the compelling story of America's democracy from an individual perspective, from across the landscapes of diverse communities, and ultimately from within the larger context of the world.
The Concise Second Edition tells the same great story, but with fewer words and images. Maintaining the structure, the features, and maps of the comprehensive edition, this concise version has been thoughtfully condensed--paragraphs now contain trimmed sentences and a reduced number of examples--thus leaving the book's core content and compelling narrative unchanged. The second edition includes 75 percent fewer margin quotations and 60 percent fewer images than in the comprehensive edition.

Great for CLEP testsing
By -
I always use the REA books for CLEP tests (US History I was my 5th tests - taken and passed). But they are not QUITE enough. I found these (two volumes) CONCISE history books and used them as my main study guided, supplemented by REA (because I have not been in school for nearly 40 years!). I passed the US History I this past month with my highest score yet (74). Granted, the books are LONG (about 500 pages each, with very dense information so the reading is slow if you need to learn every bit of it). But getting 3 credits for an $80 test plus $20 admin fee plus $25 REA plus the cost of this book is WELL worth it. Due to my age, I'm trying to get a BA in a VERY short time, and I've just reached senior status (starting from NO credits) in 1.5 years - and one of my tricks was to get all the CLEP credits my school allows. I can learn MUCH better on my own, not wasting travel time or useless lecture time. These books (I'm working on volume II for US history II now) are worth it. I studied these 2 books for about 9 days *but I mean SOLID all day studying since I remembered NOTHING from school). It does not go into as much depth as a non-concise text. And that is just fine for someone in a hurry to get to know the basics.

I feel that Oakes does not put enough information into the descriptions of historical events and some of the information put in does not seem to be relevant. Each paragraph feels like a very brief overview of the subject matter and does not always make sense since it is so vaguely written. In class we were required to analyze resources and use this bool as back up information and it was very difficult to do because there is not enough information to go off of. It is very hard to use as a resource for essays which is very troubling since my history classes are essay-based.
