I wrote this book for all the people out there who have suffered with being overweight as I did, and endured all the misery it brings. I wrote it for you if you've been teased or shamed, scolded or discriminated against, bullied or lectured and tried thousands of times to lose weight, only to suffer more pain with each defeat. I wrote it for you, once again daring to hope you might be able to solve your weight problem.
The two most significant experiences in my life have been 1) Being obese and unable to change it for 25 years and suffering all that overweight people do, and 2) Discovering how to solve the problem, losing the weight, and enjoying happiness for the last 30 years with what I learned that I share here. You've probably had my #1 miserable experience. I'd like to give you my #2, the happiness and joy of being able to succeed. I know I can. I've been successful for years helping people to succeed one-on-one, and I know that I can do it with this book because I have. It came out in 2009, and now, in 2013, I have a collection of "thank you" messages from people all over the world who have succeeded with what they've learned from this book. About the Author
William Anderson is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor practicing in Sarasota FL, a featured writer and weight loss expert at The Huffington Post, a featured expert on food addiction and weight loss at ChooseHelp.com, and Director of The Anderson Method Therapist Network. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and his graduate studies at the University of South Florida, Tampa. He credits his unique expertise and knowledge not so much to his clinical training as to his 25 years of struggle to lose weight culminating in his breakthrough success with his unique program of behavioral therapy that resulted in his remarkable success in 1984, losing 140 pounds in 18 months and keeping it off since, almost thirty years, without much difficulty.

The Anderson Method really works!

I lost 73 pounds on the Anderson method several years ago. I kept it off for a long time and decided I had my problem solved. But after much junk food, 20 pounds came back. So I used the book and it's working like a charm. By following the Anderson Method step by step, it really works on my brain, and makes me feel good about myself and in control of every part of my life as the pounds melt off. I have learned how to stop my "mindless" eating and bad habits in other parts of my life along the way, and I feel strong and in control again. This book has been a miracle for me. And I love having it on my Kindle.

You could buy a longer, more expensive, or more complicated book. Why?

You can find countless books on weight loss, dieting, nutrition, metabolism, the food industry, and so on. All will claim to have the missing information you need. I find that few to none address weight management - as you would treat time management or money management.
That is the essential difference between The Anderson Method and other reads.
We want to believe that reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is very complicated (and it is) but, as with time and money, we focus on the wrong complexity and miss the big one: psychological principles of behavior modification.
I watched William Anderson on Facebook for a while before I decided that, when I thought I was ready to address my extra weight in a permanent way, his method is the first I would try.
I didn't spend a dime. I told him that I was planning to do it on my own and that if I found I needed help I would contact him. He seemed truly happy and did not in the least try to convince me to buy a thing. Then I checked the book out from the library, read it, made notes, and promptly lost more weight than I had ever been able to do with my already healthy diet (I love kale!) and exercise regimen (recommended levels for my age). I was patient - committed to a healthy rate of loss - and took off 25 pounds in 3.5 months. It has stayed off because I know that healthy eating habits will always require attention and I now have the confidence and skill to do it with relative ease, having put in the initial time and practice - an investment as important as any savings account or IRA. You may have more to lose or you may want more help with the behavioral strategies than what the book provide. This was just my experience.
But I can tell you that the best byproduct of this method is confidence. I am a good teacher of students with special needs. I know how to focus on and reward the behaviors I want to see occurring more often. But finding out how well I could do that for myself was a great gift. I lost and maintained my weight without emotional pain or sense of dissatisfaction. And now I am improving my money and time management in the same way. For me, it's not so much about how I look. It is about how I feel: in control of my own life and well-being.

It really works!

When I first learned of Will Anderson's weight loss methods I sent him an email asking if there were any therapists in the Houston, TX area trained in his methodology, like all obese people I was looking for the easy fix and thought that by going to a therapist they would work their magic and "cure" me! He was quick to reply and unfortunately (or rather fortunately) the answer was no. He was honest when he told me that the book would outline the methodology but would not be successful if I was not willing to put the time and effort into doing this, he told me that I had to be willing to put myself and my needs first and to look at my family and job as secondary and tertiary priorities in my life. I was never going to regain my health by putting myself and my needs last in line, I needed to treat myself as the number one most important person and job.
I purchased the digital version through my ereader early last year. After reading the book in 2 days I started practicing the methodology outlined in the book, it was like turning on a switch in my head. I noticed almost immediately that I had willpower to turn away from sweets and other foods that were of no nutritional value and started wanting to eat the kind of food that my body needed for energy. I began to look at food differently and no longer desired the sinful snacks but started to look at my body as a fine tuned engine that required fuel to make it function more efficiently. It didn't take long when I started to notice the pounds drop. Gaining a little more confidence in myself I began exercising as well, nothing hard, just walking. I started off with about 1 mile and then worked up to 5+ miles 5-6 times per week. My joints quit hurting, I wasn't running out of breath, my skin cleared up, my hair regained bounce and shine and my attitude really turned around since I was regaining my confidence. To date, I have lost 78 pounds. It took me about 10 months to lose the weight sensibly and I have maintained my weight loss for a year. If I find myself slipping and craving sweets I just open this book and start reading again and it puts it all in perspective for me.
I have tried so many other diets and was even looking into taking drastic measures (weight loss surgery) to gain my health back...all it took was reading this book and putting things into perspective. I knew that weight loss surgery would not solve the reasons I overate, this has to come from within. If you are willing to take the time to figure these things out and really take a look at yourself and your behaviors it will most definitely make the difference between being successful with your weight loss efforts or not. I cannot thank Dr. Anderson enough for taking the time to convey his thoughts and methods into written form and share them with those who do not live near a therapist trained in his methodology or others who cannot afford therapy. It works, but just like he told me...you have to be willing to make the changes, make yourself a priority and the rest just clicks into place.
