Read it in one day. Was a good read but bow I'm annoyed because I have to wait for yet another sequel. If you're going to break it down in to so many different short stories the books should be cheaper and release dates closer together. Hope book 4 finishes out the story.

Keep you on your toes, i true holder I couldn't put my phone down every since i began reading this book, Sha cole has a great imagination and I can honestly say my eyes were always teary while reading this and it is actually people out here that will do such things to people, I would recommend this book to any one of my peers thats how good it is. A real eye opener .

About the Author
MARK E. ORAZEM is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Florida. He organized the 6th International Symposium on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and teaches a short course on impedance spectroscopy for The Electrochemical Society. Dr. Orazem is a Fellow of The Electrochemical Society (ECS) and a member of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE).

BERNARD TRIBOLLET is a Director of Research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Associate Director of the Laboratoire Interfaces et Systémes Electrochimique at Pierre and Marie Curie University. He instructs an annual short course on impedance spectroscopy. Dr. Tribollet is a member of The Electrochemical Society (ECS) and the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE).

Good book with clear details

There are essentially two books in this field (EIS), one by Barsoukov and JR Macdonald (2005) and this one. This book starts at basic level and provides detailed formulas and derivations and hence is student friendly. The book by Barsoukov et al is actually compilation of various chapters written by different authors and reflect the diversity of the authors (e.g. Battery, Fuel cells, Corrosion with details of point defect model by DD Macdonald). This book, on the other hand, emphasizes more on measurement models, error structures and so on. Understandably, the research work of the authors' have a strong influence on what areas are dealt with in more detail. If you want to get all the relevant details in one place, instead of rummaging through journal articles, this is very useful. e.g. The various types of representing impedance data, analysis (Nyquist, Lissajous, Bode) and the advantage of each type/method are all dealt with nicely. The chapter on Kramers Kronig relation is also, for example, a good compilation.

One thing that I would like to see in these books is a link to a permanent web page (perhaps in the publisher's site), where errata is posted, some simple programs useful for class room teaching or self learning can be downloaded, and additional new and relevant materials (or links to those) can be posted. For example, if the recent work by one of the authors on Kramers -Kronig relations ability to detect nonlinearities would be a good thing to add on and perhaps include in the next version of the book.

Brilliant

Part of me was hoping for a nice pictorial handbook: "If your computer screen looks like this, your sample has a porous layer." But instead I've received a thoughtful treatment of fundamental principles with a generous sprinkling of (gasp) relevant derivations. This is a book I'll need to read one section at a time while pondering each new concept. Each section has a box with a little elephant and the words "Remember! Never short the wires together..." or something helpful like that. Diffusion is covered in depth in multiple chapters, and I expect I will eventually attain a very deep understanding of its effects on impedance spectra. Eventually.

This is the type of book with all that beginners need for understand the impedance. Mathematical background (complex number, statistical tools, differential equations), electrochemical instrumentation, many examples, really very clear and complete. The best book for beginners about impedance that I had seen.

An excellent text. The writing style is scholarly but still clear to the novice in the field, not written for obscurity as some texts seem to do. Although it is accessible to me as a student, still I anticipate keeping this book for future reference in my career. The layout of the chapters is sensible. Information is easy to find. Definitely a worthwhile book for my professional shelf. The only reason for the 4 stars is the terribly poor binding. With very gentle use over only a few weeks, the binding has basically disintegrated.

Top Notch Game Setting!

This is a remake of the Dark Matter book for Alternity, and it is still a fantastic gaming setting. If you like X-files or any sort of conspiracy theory alien invasion book, this is the one for you. This book incorperates magic, psi, high tech, alien species, even extra dimensional creatures all seamlessly.

Reasons to buy this book:

1) Fantastic new rules, feats, classes, etc. This book doesn't dissapoint there.

2) Brilliant art. I know, I know, gaming isn't about the art, but this book has art second only to some high end WOD books.

3) It's very true to the original Dark Matter from Alternity. I played D20 modern for years using the old Dark Matter book and transfering evertying to the D20 system. The original book is more thorough, but this one has every major thing you'll need in it, and you won't need to juggle between gaming systmes to do so.

4) The timeline of the "true history of the earth" is really brilliant. All you need to do is pick a date on there, and you've got yourself an adventure. (A few years ago, we ran what we called Dark Matter 1942 and set the entire campaign in WWII at the birth of the OSS and the downfall of the Nazis who really weren't quite human...)

5) The Hoffman Institute (the group your characters are supposed to work for) is well thought out, and it's founder Dr. Nakami ends up being a very interesting character when you put him in the game. Normally, I hate this type of thing and come up with my own hooks, organizations, and NPCs, but this stuff is so well done, I used it all.

6) This is VERY well researched and thorough. If there is a strange place (there's a whole atlass of strange places and their histories in this book--very cool!), and odd event, or a mythological creature anywhere in the world, this book somehow manages to weave it in to it's all encompasing conspiracy. Vampires? Sure. Big foot? No problem. Gray aliens? It's got you covered. Everything to Tesla and Tanguska to the Masons and a moon base are tied in here!

Weaknesses:

1) The only one I can think of is a lack of enemies in a creature section. Having said that, however, most of the key creatures and aliens you'll encouter are already published in other D20 modern creature suppliments, so they're out there! Go buy the menace manual, and you'll be covered.

2) The original was a real no-holds-barred gaming experience. The PCs were never safe, and even minor creatures could kill the most advanced of characters. This led to some real spooky and intense gaming moments as players were genuinely worried about their characters. The D20 translation isn't quite as nice here. Your 15th level tough character is simply NOT going to be threatened by a gun or even a Weren. Even in a fantastic setting, realism lends a lot. I'd suggest playing it in the D20 Cthulu system for some more brutal rules and less powerful characters.

All in all, this is a book like no other. If you like aliens and modern day conspiracies, this book will change your games forever. I've run two full Dark Matter campaigns now, each lasting a few years, and I'm bearing up to do my third. This is, quite simply, as good as gaming gets!

Did you own Alternity Dark Matter?

Did you own Alternity Dark Matter? If so, you may not need this book. It's largely a straight-forward conversion of the original Alternity Dark Matter book-- it even has the same sample scenario, "Exit 23!" I'd say about half the art was lifted from the original book.

That said, the Dark Matter setting has always been really nice, and if you never bought the Alternity book, or are looking for a supported conversion, this is the book for you. In the vein of the X-Files, you and your party are working for the mysterious Hoffman Institute, investigating paranormal phenomenon and defending the ignorant humanity from supernatural threat. The "real" history of the Earth is presented, as well as the various cults and conspiracies that thrive today, hidden in the shadows. You can investigate mysteries involving traditional unknown such as Greys (Fraal), the Men in Black and the Sasquatch, or Dark Matter-specific entities such as the Kinori, the Sandmen or the many secret societies.

There are three new starting occupations, rules for four non-human character species, twenty new Feats, two Advanced Classes, three Prestige Classes, a few pages of specialized equipment and...85 pages of setting, twenty or so pages of GM advice and plot hooks, and the Exit 23 adventure. They don't even give any, repeat, ANY stats for creatures, referring you to the d20 Menace Manual.

All in all, it's a GOOD PRODUCT, but be aware of what it is and decide for yourself whether or not you should buy.

P.S. The front and rear covers glow in the dark, and are pretty cool.

pretty good

The product is pretty good. however, it could have had more guidance on how to run the world. I felt a little annoyed that there is so much dependence on the Menace Manual for using the product. I feel a supplement should be mostly self sufficient but expandable. expecially since it was based on previously published material.

quality of art and material was good.

Surprising things to think about

Given an infinite amount of time, you will reappear … Quantum resurrection may await all of us.

While the subject of this book is rather gloomy it is full of some glorious surprises. The possibility of quantum resurrection gives hope to the idea that death is not the end, and the optimistic quote above is taken from the final chapter. But, one does not have to wait until the final pages for such pleasantries. There are other lighthearted touches such as the words of Mel Blanc’s Porky Pig who famously said “That’s All Folks” and today these words grace the tombstone of their creator; the chapter on the story of tombstones is especially interesting.

But, all is not levity as the stories of the black death, Hades, grave robbing, autopsy and even genocide will reveal. The term “zombie” has its popular and even slang usages, but the real story is far more interesting, and the accompanying image will dance in your mind long after reading the passage. So too will the chapter on the master of the macabre Edgar Allan Poe which might be further enhanced by the ambience of a stormy night as it did for me. Other chapters cover such things as the electric chair, the guillotine, near-death experiences, with my favorite entitled “Ghost Dance” about a special dance performed by Native Americans; the illustration is magnificent. To summarize: This book says a great deal of what it means to be human.

The format of the book consists of one page entries on the right hand pages with stunning full color illustrations on the facing left hand pages. In addition, relevant dates are given for the contents of each chapter. Further, there is a brief introduction and some notes and references, and it all begins with an especially captivating cover.

To keep your pocketbook alive and well the price of the book is very reasonable.

The Undiscovered Country(*)

Cliff Pickover is a technologist who has written over forty books on mathematics and science. However, he has included the darker side of human existence in his “Book of Black” and now goes further with “Death and the Afterlife.”

Death is not an easy subject to deal with. People have struggled with the question since the beginning of humanity. Death is difficult because it is so final. After death, as (*)Hamlet observes, there is no coming back.

The author has documented one hundred instances, in chronological order, of the process of dying, of how people deal with the dead, and the related subject of what the dead experience after death, e.g., the afterlife.

The chronology starts with cremation, 20,000 BC, and takes us through the death of the Universe, over 100 trillion years in the future. In between, we see physical manifestations: burial mounds, mummies, embalming, the terra-cotta army, cryonics, and much more. There are also the imagined realms of Hades, Hell, Xibalba, and, of course, Vampires and Zombies.

Each of the 100 subjects receives a two-page spread, which includes a full page image on the left and a page of text on the right. The images include works of art and photographs. All of them are good illustrations of the text. My favorites are the Viking ship burial and Hades with Cerberus, the three-headed dog.

I found the reading to be compelling, although some may find the contents of this book disturbing. View it as a real estate listing. Choose the afterlife that you prefer and then go for it.

Surprisingly Seductive Reading

At first glance the snazzy Gothic cover design of Cliff Pickover’s DEATH AND THE AFTERLIFE seems forbidding and gruesome. But upon closer examination its symmetry and radiance suggest a happy journey through the scary house of macabre mysteries that we humans both love and fear. And after reading the book from cover to cover I can say that, for me at least, it was a pleasant, even reassuring experience.

Anyone who has found themselves fascinated by Edgar Allen Poe or H.P. Lovecraft can attest to the guilty pleasure of delving into the horror genre. The specter of death and the possibility of some form of transfiguration and resurrection is an ancient theme that has been immortalized by the greatest poets, priests, artists, and in folklore for millenniums. Apparently, the seeming finality of death coupled with the belief in the miraculous survival of the spirit (or body) in some other place – or sometimes among us – provides a needed psychic balance for the human species.

DEATH AND THE AFTERLIFE sheds light on this and the history of cremation, burial, and the preparation (or disposal) of the bodies of the deceased in addition to the numerous versions of continued existence that may await us. But it also explains numerous scientific concepts and techniques that have come into being in modern times, such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation , Transhumanism, Cryonics, Afterlife in a Simulation, Quantum Immortality, Programmed Cell Death, Quantum Resurrection, and highly improbable but mathematically possible “Boltzmann’s Brains. These “spooky conscious observers” are “self-aware, free floating brains in outer space” that could arise due to thermal fluctuations over an infinitely long period of time. This means that we could reappear as a discarnate intelligence that wanders through space and time learning, analyzing, calculating, and rhapsodizing as we encounter unimaginable worlds in our endless travels throughout whatever sort of universe may exist in 500 trillion years. It’s a long wait, but who knows? We may wake up from a deep sleep and suddenly be a Boltzmann’s Brain made of pure gold and singing to galaxies of stars.

The key thing to remember is that no one is absolutely sure of what will become of us in the great beyond. We have our beliefs, which often arise out of personal experience and the interconnectedness of our most fateful decisions amid the laws of chance, as well as through the friends we make, and the people we love and hate. And yet, we still retain a certain Cartesian doubt about where we’re really headed. So all of us should devote serious thought to these matters of utmost importance, and mull over our prospects. We know that dying is inevitable, but life after death is the greatest leap into the unknown we will ever face. If you want a business book that is going to keep you up at night, this is the book...

David has gathered some of the top minds in business and brought them together in a storytelling fashion that provides the reader not only with an entertaining way to understand what the "Disruption" in business is all about, but also practical information on how to go about making the right changes you need to make to your business. Here's the thing though -- If you think everything is status quo and nothing needs to change, then don't bother reading the book. But if you are trying to make sense of what the digital and social "revolution" means to your business, then it's a must read. (And yes, I wrote a chapter in the book.)

And you could say I was touting my own horn. But in actuality, what I am applauding is the idea that the "wisdom of the crowd" is far more powerful than any one person -- and the assembly of wise minds on a topic is the key to this book's success. David has orchestrated the wisdom of the many and weaved it together into a compelling and highly relevant book.

Part of what I see in my practice is what is that senior executives are not clear on how the digital and social revolution is affecting their business. As a result, they are delegating these activities to downward into the organization. And that's where the trouble begins. At the middle level management rank, they do get that there's things that need to be changed. But that level is used to keeping things status quo. They are not accustomed to telling senior management that things need to change and in a big way. So what many of them are doing is trying to make the changes, but without the right budget, resources, technology or staff. In fact, many of them are so busy trying to keep up that they are delegating what needs to be done even further down into the organization.

And sometimes too far down. I've seen the delegation go so deep into the organization that large brands are trusting a 23 year old to handle the social and digital strategy. The thinking is that because they know how to use Facebook in their personal life, they must know how to use it for increasing revenue and decreasing costs for the corporation. Some may - but most 23 year olds don't have the wisdom or experience of someone in the 40's and 50's. (And if you are 23, please don't get mad at me. I'm not saying you are not amazing or not smart. All I'm saying is that companies, large ones at least, generally don't put a 23 year old in charge of global transformation projects. That's because without the years of actually going through several of these, no one could possibly have the knowledge or experience or wisdom to do it justice. That comes with time and thus years of experience. I know this because I once was 23 and now I'm much older and I do see the difference between when I knew then and what I know now.)

So that's why this book is so important. It's mission critical that very senior executives understand the global transformation that is happening, where their company stands in the middle of all of this and determine if they have the right strategy, people, tactics, plans, resources, tools, technology... and if they are ready to utilize all of that and beat the competition, reduce costs and increase revenue. If you are reading this and you are not sure how to do that... then get the book. You'll be well on your way to understanding what's really happening and what the future holds. You need to make sure your ready. Stop delegating and start doing.

Prepare to be taken into the future

Rather than trying to be the expert, this compilation of perspectives from authentic and contemporary experts really brings home the broad spectrum of what the word (and world of) innovation can really bring to the party. I would challenge anyone to read even a single chapter without a new and fully viable concept coming to directly to mind as a result. Highly recommended for teams engaged in revolutionary and disruptive product and process development. Hoping and already looking forward to follow-up edition (if that's in the cards - fingers crossed). Read it and pass it on - worth every penny and minute spent reading.

Perfect book for the change agents of the world!

David does a fantastic job in the introduction to explain what he means by disruption revolution. He uses data and his well informed personal observations of the world to make a strong case for disruption. I also found his message to be very empowering to those that are already advocates of the disruption revolution. Even the dedication page is essentially a shout out to all those that have the courage to be remarkable. The all-star line up of interviewees gives the reader a wide variety of perspectives on innovation and disruption. Probably the best part about the book is that it represents creativity and disruption based on it's format. Most business books are a combination of stories, tips, advice and facts. This book is one thought provoking interview after the next. There were a few innovators that I follow pretty closely that were interviewed for the book, and I read stories that I never heard before in any of their books or keynotes. David did a phenomenal job identifying the right people and asking the right questions to give the reader an unfiltered look into the lives of some of the worlds brightest minds.
I am currently teaching an online course on innovation in education and am using it as a recommended reading for the course. I think educators can learn a great deal about disruption from this book. Even thought it was not designed for an educator audience, the lessons are applicable across industries.
