It has been claimed that we live in a time without myth. But if C.G. Jung, Joseph Campbell, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Mann, Mary Shelley, Robert Graves, Jorge Luis Borges, F. "What is the myth behind your story?" asks the back cover of this slim and readable book. Craig Chalquist offers a reconciliation between two truisms: everybody is unique, and there is nothing new under the sun. How are patterns and incidents in your life a reflection, or continuation, of the great human stories held in mythology, spirituality and culture? What can you learn about yourself by understanding the tale that contains your tale? Storied Lives: Discovering and Deepening Your Personal Myth is the distillation of many years of personal, professional, and academic experience by Dr. Chalquist exploring ways to allow one's personal myth to become consciously understood and lived.

In the midst of clearly explaining the concepts from C.G. Jung and other depth psychologists that led to his understanding Dr. Chalquist drops, like lucky pennies found on the sidewalk, illustrations and images from contemporary culture that bring technicolor clarity to his ideas. He also has the ability to accurately represent ideas from various systems of thought at the same time as he points out--often with a compassionate humor--the fallacies and foibles of those systems.

His extensive cross-cultural familiarity with archetypal images from myth and story allows him to link them to historical and present day figures with insight, compassion, humor, and even sadness where appropriate. How is George W. Bush like Mars? How was John Denver like Icarus?

In addition Dr. Chalquist offers a summary of the work of other writers on personal myth and explains the similarities and differences between their understanding and his. There is, at times, a numinous, dream, or day-dreamlike quality to Dr. Chalquist's writing. This can be a challenge to those personalities like mine who prefer reality clearly defined in logical and progressive steps with the rules spelled out. This book is not a typical 21st century "how to" manual that gives you ten easy steps guaranteed to enable you to find your personal myth. Rather, as the Jungian scholar that he is, Craig Chalquist suggests, points over there, offers possible ideas and methods that could enable you to see the resonance between the great human stories and the deepest experiences of your life. Those resonances, listened to and dreamed about, have the potential to clarify your sense of self in remarkable ways--as they did for me. I was surprised at how clear Chalquist was able to make this subject which often becomes weighed down in jargon. If you are new to the idea of myth as a personal inquiry tool I highly recommend it. I gained perspective on the intersections of Campbell, Hillman, and Jung which helped me during my analysis process.

Hassan's account begins in the early twentieth century, as he considers the pioneering Lebanese American writers, Ameen Rihani and Kahlil Gibran. The former's seminal novel, The Book of Khalid sought to fuse Arabic and European literary traditions in search of a civilizational synthesis, whereas the latter found success by mixing Hindu, Christian, mystical, and English Romantic ideas into a popular spiritualism. Hassan then considers Arab immigrant life-writing, ranging from autobiographies by George Haddad and Abraham Rihbany to memoirs of exile by the Egyptian-born Leila Ahmed and Palestinian refugees like Fawaz Turki and Edward Said. Hassan considers issues of representation in looking to how Arab immigrant writers like Ramzi Salti and Rabih Alameddine use homosexuality to reflect on Arab typecasting. Ahdaf Soueif's fiction reflects her growing awareness of the politics of reception of Anglophone Arab women writers while Leila Aboulela's fiction, inspired by an immigrant Islamic perspective, depicts the predicament of the Muslim minority in Britain.

Drawing upon postcolonial, translation, and minority discourse theory, Immigrant Narratives investigates how key writers have described their immigrant experiences, acting as mediators and interpreters between cultures, and how they have forged new identities in their adopted countries.
