Very Disappointing

I was very disappointed by the quality of this book. Given some critical review and editing by both the authors and editors, the next edition of this book could be a very useful primer on homeland security. This current edition, however, was poorly edited, minimal effort (if any) went into source verification, and the authors made judgments/drew conclusions that that were poorly supported at best. Although I am tempted to provide examples of the mistakes, poor documentation, unverified sourcing, and out of date information, I do not wish to publicly embarrass Gaines, Kappeler, or the editors of the book. I do feel compelled to warn students, if required to purchase this book, to read it with a very critical eye. I would also encourage any teachers/professors/instructors to do the same before requiring it for your classes.

Required reading

The course I took required this textbook. The textbook was very informative. HOWEVER, I've read tens of textbooks relating to criminal justice and this one was probably the driest I've ever had to read. Retaining the information was difficult because it honest to God is the most boring book I've ever had to lay eyes on.

Needs More Update And Less Ideology

Very dated reference but does provide very detailed insight on terrorism as it relates to evolution of homeland security. Copyright is 2012 although not much information on homeland security programs after 2010. Could have done without subjective/subliminal references to what is a blatant [liberal] viewpoint from the authors. Expect more objectivity and a "just the facts" approach from college level reference material. Wait, ...what?

Simply Amazing

The BEST $4.99 I have ever spent in my Life, and that's not an Exaggeration

I happened to find Jim Tolles' blog by accident, or not, when I was searching for information about Spiritual Awakening. It was on his blog that I came upon his ebook. I read a bit of it from his blog and was very intrigued by the information. I have been on a Spiritual Journey/Journey of Self DIscovery. I noticed that the book was only $4.99 and at first I thought that the price maybe was an indication of the quality. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. I purchased the book and the book was nothing short of Amazing. You see, what I discovered on my path is that I tended to be all over the place, I didn't have any type of framework to follow to be sure I was moving in the right direction, at times I felt like I was either going in circles or jumping around so much that I was exhausted and lost at the same time. This book gave me a Practical path to follow, and outlines the "issues" that are standing in most of our ways of being who we are.
I had the privilege of meeting Jim in person and I believe he is a genuine, loving being that really does care about the health and welfare of each and every one of us. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this book, the first few pages alone are worth the price of admission.

Wonderful book!

If you are looking for spiritual guidance and not religious dogma, I encourage you to not only buy this book, but you should also check Jim out on his YouTube channel ([...] I am not a follower and am not easily swayed, impressed, or lead (translation: NOT A SHEEP.) Jim Tolles is not looking for followers or trying to get you to drink his brand of kool-aid. Jim guides you by helping you look inside yourself to find your answers and suggests ways to connect with others to help you along your path. If you're looking for someone to give you all the answers or tell you what to do, you won't find it here. However, if you simply need a guide, someone to help find the answers that are inside you, read this book and watch his videos.

Misleading Title + Interesting Approach, but Clear Drawbacks

NOTE: This is a "reprint" *NOT* a the claimed 2nd Edition. The "2nd Edition" is apparently a marketing ploy.

That said...

PROS:

1) Expressions are written in *real Japanese*: All the Japanese expressions in the book are presented in real Japanese (kanji and all). ** pronunciation is given in romji (western alphabet used to represent Japanese), which I think leads to bad Japanese pronunciation, but the author uses a special, codified form of romaji to try to convey the Japanese "tonal accent". ** I get the author's plan, but think it is counter productive as tonal accent isn't that important (different regions of Japan have different tonal patterns anyhow). Monotone is just fine as, due to the utterly massive number of homonyms in Japanese, context is usually what determines what meaning a sound-pattern is representing anyhow. Ditching Romaji completely and instead including an Audio CD would have been *much* better.

2) Conjugations: Japanese is *all* about verbs; a verb all by itself can be a complete sentence. You modify verbs to add "nuance".
For example: tabeRU: eat, tabeNAI: don't eat, tabeTAI: want to eat, tabeTAKUNAI: don't want to eat, ETC.
This book presents a lot of this verb modifications clearly, with several examples, and in a compact location.

3) Flow charts: I imagine that the usefulness of these will vary from person to person. Personally, I don't think that they are remotely critical, but they are interesting and could help certain types of learners.

CONS:

1) BIG CON - no casual speech!!! This book is all about semi-formal business speech. Most books start with this (in my opinion this is a flawed) approach of presenting semi-formal Japanese first and then later covering more casual Japanese -- however this book never covers casual Japanese.
This is big problem for several reasons:
A) 85%+ of real Japanese (what you'll hear on the street, TV, Movies, around the house, during after-work drinks, etc) will be casual Japanese.
B) Advanced Japanese is based on the building blocks of casual Japanese - this applies even to advanced semi-formal Japanese. Example structure of an advance Japanese statement: casual-phrase + link + casual phrase + link + semi-formal ending. So *MOST* Japanese actual requires knowledge of casual speech.
C) If you can only speak semi-formal Japanese, people will feel that you are stiff... and eventually might actually come to view you as rude. They will ultimately expect you to speak with them more casually, in order to show that you are feeling closer kinship to them.
Bottom line: Casual Speech is extremely important to both "getting along" in Japan, and to being able to progress to advanced Japanese.

2) No Audio - Listening to a foreign language is the key to learning how to properly speak a foreign language. And while the author has come up with a clever modified-romaji system to try and visualize the pronunciation, it forces the brain to have to try to digest Japanese, translate the modified-romaji system into some sort of sound structure, comprehend the grammar, etc - all simultaneously. Brains don't tend to like that much processing. I simple audio CD would have been a better, and more accurate way to address the issue that the author was trying to solve.

How I would use this book:
I wouldn't use this as your sole study source. I would use this as a secondary text to help learn more complex verb-form combinations.

Good book, but needs to be used with other books in order to be successful

It really is a good beginner's to intermediate reference and study book. I've been using it with Japanese Demystified, which is more like a workbook. Together, they work very well. This one covers more words than Demystified, but doesn't have the writing and reading practice that Demystified does. If you're a newbie to Japanese, you might want something a little bit more basic than this one, but if you have had a little bit of Japanese, this one along with any sort of Japanese workbook sort of text will help you a lot.

Not What I Was Expecting

I bought this looking for a better way to learn Japanese. The book itself is nifty. It is a paperback and is large. The readability is nice. However, I find it difficult to really get into the actual learning. There are vocabulary words all over the thing and they happen somewhat haphazardly within each section. You don't get through reading about one "lesson" without picking up at least another 50 words or more that are new to you. These words are never reintroduced later for practice. The whole thing is also written in English with a lot of romanji cluttering it up. There is no practical learning of the kata other than through the spread out vocab lists that give you either the kana + romanji or the kanji + romanji. It was really disappointing. I still enjoy it, however, because it makes a nice addition to my collection and has some value to it as a learning aid.

Not for beginners and requires a lot of work from the reader

I'm still in the process of reading it so obviously I'll need to post an update when I either finish or give up. This is nowhere near well written and the author seems to jump around and assume the reader already has a deep understanding of chef. This is my second chef book, I've done multiple training sessions, and I'm responsible for maintaining chef and writing recipes for my production environment. I bought this book to give me a deep dive into chef. I think that's what it's providing but it's hard to tell. The author jumps around rapidly and continually references portions of the product that he hasn't covered yet.

I'm still holding out hope that decyphering the authors intent will get me to a much deeper understanding of chef but I haven't found it helpful so far. This is definitely not for beginners. That all being said the author clearly understands chef and I've already come across multiple explanations that gave me insight into aspects of chef that I didn't understand before. It's just really frustrating trying to dig them out of the poorly written and scattered text.
