About the Author
"Dr. Warren J. Keegan." Dr. Keegan is Distinguished Professor of Marketing and International Business and Director of the Institute for Global Business Strategy at the Lubin School of Business, Pace University, New York City and Westchester. He is Visiting University Professor, Cranfield School of Management (UK), CEIBS (China European International Business School) Shanghai, the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Executive Programs, and ESSEC, Cergy - Pontoise (France). He is the founder of Warren Keegan Associates, Inc., a consulting consortium of experts in global strategic management and marketing and Keegan & Company LLP, a firm specializing in litigation support. The firm is affiliated with MarkPlus, the leading marketing consulting firm of Indonesia.

Dr. Keegan is the author of many books. His text, "Global Marketing Management," Seventh Edition (2002, Prentice Hall, Inc.) is recognized as the leading Global Marketing text for M.B.A. courses around the world. His other books include "Offensive Marketing" (2004), "Global Marketing," Third Edition (2003, Prentice Hall), "Marketing Plans That Work," Second Edition (2002, Butterworth-Heinemann), "Marketing," Second Edition (1995, Prentice Hall), "Marketing Sans Frontieres" (1994, InterEditions), "Advertising Worldwide" (1991, Prentice Hall), and "Judgments, Choices and Decisions" (1984, Wiley). He is a former faculty member of Columbia Business School, Baruch College, and The School of Government and Business Administration of The George Washington University.

He is a Lifetime Fellow of the Academy of International Business, Individual Eminent Person (IEP) Appointed by Asian Global Business Leaders Society (other awardees include: Noel Tichy, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and Gary Wendt). His biography is listed in "Marquis Who's Who in America." He is a member of the International Advisory Board of Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC), Montreal; the Editorial Advisory Board, Cranfield School of Management; and Financial Times Management Monograph Series and is a current or former director of The S.M. Stoller Company, Inc., The Cooper Companies, Inc. (NYSE), InterAd, Inc., American Thermal Corporation, Inc., Halfway Houses of Westchester, Inc., Wainwright House, and The Rye Arts Center.

"Dr. Mark C. Green." Dr. Green is Professor of Management and Marketing at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he teaches courses in management, marketing, advertising, international marketing, innovation, and Russian language. He earned his B.A. degree inRussian literature from Lawrence University, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Russian linguists from Cornell University and an M.B.A. degree in marketing management from Syracuse University.

In addition to co-authoring "Global Marketing," Fourth Edition with Warren Keegan, Dr. Green has also contributed case studies and chapter materials to several other textbooks published by Prentice Hall. These include: "Advertising Principles and Practices," Fourth Edition, by William Wells, John Burnett, and Sandra Moriarty (1997); "Behavior in Organizations," Sixth Edition, by Jerald Greenberg and Robert Baron (1996); "Business," Fourth Edition, by Ricky Griffin and Ronald Ebert (1995); and "Principles of Marketing" by Warren Keegan, Sandra Moriarty, and Thomas Duncan (1992). Dr. Green has also written essays on technology and global business that have appeared in the "Des Moines Register" and other newspapers.

Dr. Green has traveled to the former Soviet Union on numerous occasions. In 1995 and 1996, he participated in a grant project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and presented marketing seminars to audiences in Nizhny Novgorod. In addition, Dr. Green has served as a consultant to several Iowa organizations that have business and cultural ties with Russia and other former Soviet republics. Dr. Green has lectured in Russia and Ukraine on topics relating to emerging market economies. His 1992 monograph, "Developing the Russian Market" in the 1990s, received an award from the Iowa-based International Network on Trade.

In 1997, Dr. Green was the recipient of Simpson College's Distinguished Research and Writing Award. Dr. Green also received the 1995Distinguished Teaching Award for senior faculty. In 1990, he was the recipient of Simpson's Excellence in Teaching Award for junior faculty. He also received the 1988 Outstanding Faculty of the Year awarded by the Alpha Sigma Lambda adult student honorary at Simpson College.

Good jumping off point.

I found this books very useful. I've been trying to find an intelligent investing style. Read things like "The Intelligent Investor" by Graham and "A Random Walk Down Wall St." by Malkiel and found them dry and somewhat inaccessible. I much prefered Evans and Malkiel's "Earn More (Sleep Better) : The Index Fund Solution" (cheesy title) and Bernstein's "The Intelligent Asset Allocator". Both small and intelligible books. The only problem is they seemed to state the solution to a problem I didn't know. That's where Gibson's "Asset Allocation" I think fits in. It describes what the problem is when trying to invest well. He makes very good arguments on what you can expect and what you'll have to understand. Things that Berstein and Malkiel go into more depth but Gibson gives you the big picture. I started looking for the solution to a problem and found that the last piece I need was to know what the problem was. Gibson's book reads fast and it is interesting. It's well illustrated and is a great jump off point to all sort of other books.

Very important read on diversification.

There are many ways to look at a portfolio, thus a long-term investment strategy, so there are many ways a book's author can add value to the portfolio-making process. Graham adds it through the analysis of stock-level capital appreciation, Malkiel adds it through the deep understanding of the overall market, Siegel adds it through the analysis of the power of time, Edleson adds it through the analysis of persistent equity acquisition, Bogle adds it through the analysis of portfolio implementation, Bernstein adds it through the analysis of an individual investor's psychological background.

Yet, IMHO, Gibson is the only one who truly adds value to the portfolio-making process through the analysis of the mechanics of high-level asset allocation. Every investor should read this book to understand the portfolio development process in general, and the rewards of multiple-asset-class investing in particular.

Gibson's is the only book I found that very clearly and with due emphasis explains that, contrary to common sense, a portfolio including non-top performers for a period can actually outperform a single top-performer for the same period, and that a portfolio ignoring a worst-performer for a period can actually be penalized and underperform portfolios that intentionally include it. In short, you might not have to time the market and/or always hold only the winners to actually do better than most of the winners themselves, and with less volatility. No other author makes that point as well as Gibson (with Bernstein coming up a somewhat distant second), and no other author makes it a point to consider commodities as a building block of an aggressive portfolio.

The only problem I have with this book is what other reviewers have already mentioned: the book, at times, leaves you yearning (if that's the right word...) for more information. For example, I would like to have seen more examples of model portfolio performance vs. various fixed-income asset allocations ("taming" volatility through the degree of diversification vs. loading up blind on fixed-income), a more thorough discussion of rebalancing (Gibson suggests "once a year", Bernstein tries to ride trends and suggests "once every 2 to 3 years"), a more thorough discussion of market cap and investing style impacts on modeled asset classes (micro-caps, value- oriented indexes, etc.)

Other than that, this book is worth every penny paid for it, and every minute spent studying it.

A Good Intro, But....

A better title for this book would be "An Introduction to Investments, Practice Management and Asset Allocation". Only about a chapter and a half deals with asset allocation issues; the rest is about the basics of economics and investments, practice management, fact finders, etc.
The text is quite handy in that it covers the basics of all three of these investment areas in a style that is very readable and understandable. If you are a novice to investing or are considering a career (shift) in(to) investments, this book provides a nice overview and is a good starting point. If you are already an investment professional or have your CFA designation, don't bother; you'll find it far too simplistic.

First of all this 'book' is very short. I expected an in depth perspective on the various attributes needed to make a profitable enterprise in the data-oriented business structure but just didn't think that this delivered.
I don't remember if I paid for this or not. It would be fine if it were free but if I paid more than $1.99 then I paid too much.

The book draws on the extensive visual archive of the Kibbo Kift, held at the Museum of London, comprising graphic designs, photographs, ceremonial objects, banners, costume, regalia, log books and archive material, much of which has not been seen in public since the 1920s and 1930s. The collection includes many striking photographs by Angus McBean, official Kin Photographer in the late 1920s. Designing Utopia also touches on Hargrave s career as a writer. In his novels, as with his graphics, Hargrave s imagination drew from the fragmented modern world of mass culture, advertising and film he saw around him and re-cast its elements in ways that suited his convictions about social order. Hargrave and the Kibbo Kift have been under-explored by cultural historians. But their time has come. The story of the Kibbo Kift has strong resonances with twenty-first century debates about art, politics, individualism, anti-capitalism, nature and the environment. Fascinating, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated

A fascinating, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated account of the life and work of John Hargrave, founder of the Kibbo Kift Kindred and later among the chief protagonists of the Social Credit movement in England.

Exemplifying the virtues and limitations of the early 20th century "self-taught man", Hargrave was accomplished in a variety of fields and evidently possessed great powers of imagination, energy and charisma. He designed the Kibbo Kift Kindred as a pacifistic, progressive and universalist breakaway from Baden-Powell's Christian/nationalist/militaristic Scouting movement.

Although never very great in numbers, the Kindred were highly active and influential during the decade following the First World War. They organised camping and hiking expeditions, staged elaborately theatrical rituals and mystical plays, produced strikingly original handcrafts and costumes, all according to Hargrave's comprehensive philosophy for the betterment of each individual Kin member and the wider society.

As war again approached, Hargrave attempted to transform the Kindred into a political movement, via the quasi-militaristic Green Shirt Brigade, agitating for the institution of a radical, Social Credit-based economic reform. Essentially failing in this attempt, Hargrave gradually withdrew from the public spotlight, and his efforts had been largely forgotten by the time he died in 1982.

The final chapter argues persuasively that the Kindred was, in fact, an idea decades ahead of its time, pointing out parallels between Hargrave's Utopian visions and later counter-cultural movements such as the hippies, neo-Paganism, the Burning Man festival and the Occupy movement.
