Pandora's Box of unique recipes.

This recipe book is a practical guide to eating food that makes us feel fresh, energetic and light. I love the breakfast ideas in particular, since that is one meal I eat properly. I thoroughly enjoyed making the energy bars and coffee cakes. It has also introduced me to some unique ingredients like tapioca flour, cannelini beans and pui lentils. Oh, and the holy water is heavenly and refreshing, with the basil and strawberries! I’ve tried it with raspberries too! Over all this book really celebrates the spirit of food!

Satan turns Johnny Blaze into a flaming skeleton on a motorcycle

"Ghost Rider" was one of several horror comic books that Marvel put out in the early 1970s where you got hooked on the title because Michael Ploog was drawing the book and then he moved on to something else and it was just not the same with the replacement artist. This happened with "Werewolf By Night," "Monster of Frankenstein," and "Ghost Rider." No wonder the fact that Gene Colan was the artist on "The Tomb of Dracula" from start to finish was one of the reasons that comic book was far and away Marvel's best horror title. Ploog's distinctive style made him ideal for drawing horror titles (only Berni Wrightston was better, but he was working for DC), which is why the four issues of "Marvel Spotlight" that he drew that introduced the character of Ghost Rider are the best in this collection of black & white reprints.

As our saga begins we meet Johnny Blaze, the son of the famous stunt motorcyclist Barton Blaze, who is the headliner at Crash Simpsons' Daredevil Cycle Show. After Barton is killed doing a dangerous stunt, the orphaned Johnny is raised by Crash and his wife Mona. Traumatized by the death of his father it takes Johnny a while to ride one and look death straight in the eye, and when he does at the age of fifteen his motorcycle catches on fire, explodes and kills his foster mother. She makes him promise never to ride in the show. Johnny keeps his promises, but Crash and his daughter Rocky think it is because he is a coward, but Johnny practices on his own (he only promised not to ride in the show, right?). The he learns that Crash Simpson has less than a month to live.

So Johnny calls on Satan to spare Crash from the deadly disease that is killing him. The Prince of Darkness agrees and will be back one day soon to collect his fee. Crash decides to go for the world's cycle jump record (22 cars) and is killed (he did not die from the disease did he?). Johnny then performs the jump himself, which does not exactly endear his to the distraught Rocky, and then Satan shows up and intones: "From this day forth...you will walk the earth as my emissary in the dark hours, and in the light, you will join me in Hades!" Rocky intervenes to send Satan back to Hell, but each night Johnny Blaze becomes a burning skeleton. He just usually wears biker leathers so that all you see is his burning skull.

Actually it is not Satan but the demon lord Mephisto, but we do not learn that for a while and it really does not matter unless you are trying to reconcile the Marvel Universe with Judeo-Christian traditions. What is important is that while Mephisto was forced to leave without Blaze's soul, he was able to graft the essence of the demon Zarathos to Blaze's body. It takes Johnny a while to learn this and he thinks the Ghost Rider is just his own dark side manifested as a burning skeleton. The early stories keep the focus on what is now Johnny Blaze's Daredevil Cycle Show, and Mephisto brings back Crash Simpson as a slave to sacrifice his daughter to his dark lord. Unfortunately, by the time we get to the end of that storyline Ploog has been replaced by Tom Sutton as artist and it is just not the same. Part of the problem is that coming up with stories that bring together Satan and motorcycle each month becomes a bit difficult, which would explain why the comic featured more multi-issue storylines than most Marvel titles. This is why we get stories like "Death Stalks the Demolition Derby" ("Ghost Rider" #4) and our hero riding against the Stunt-Master (#7). Then there is the powerful stranger with the long hair and bear in "Ghost Rider" #9. Could that be....Him?

After that point the Ghost Rider takes on the Hulk (#10-11), the Phantom Eagle (#12), the Trapster (#13), and the Orb (#14), as he ends up in Hollywood as a movie stuntman and gets romantically involved with the actress Karen Page. This explains why Daredevil pops up at the end of this collection. By the time we get to the point where the Ghost Rider is fighting Spider-Man, the Thing, Hercules and a bunch of other superheroes in Hell to try and rescue the mysterious Jesus-like figure and save Karen (#18), "Ghost Rider" has jumped a whole lot more than the shark. Writer Tony Isabella creates one of the most convoluted storylines of all time and when the Son of Satan returns to help our hero (#17) trying to figure out what it all means is just not worth the effort. However, of the artists that replaced Ploog I have to say that Frank Robbins did give the book a unique look and his name should be included on the cover instead of Herb Trimpe (Robbins drew four issues included here and George Tuska three, while Trimpe just did the Son of Satan origin).

"Essential Ghost Rider Volume 1" collects together "Marvel Spotlight" #5-12, "Ghost Rider" #1-20, and "Daredevil" #138, which is the penultimate story in the collection because it is a crossover with "Ghost Rider" #20. Also, "Marvel Spotlight" #12 ends up being another crossover because Ghost Rider has his own comic book at that point and the spotlight is now on "The Son of Satan." Chances are that is one Marvel comic book that is not going to get the Essentials treatment, so this may well be the only time you see this "Ominous Origin Issue!" reprinted. Like all of the Marvel essentials, it's a lot of material for a low price. But it's in black and white and a really low quality paper. It's worth buying if you want to check the origins of Ghost Rider and not pay too much for it.

Ground-breaking but far from great

This book is indeed a much needed and very welcome first one to cover all known species of reptiles from mainland SE Asia and the Greater Sundas.
All species are shown on color plates, with more detailed descriptions of their appearance, habitat, behavior and conservation status, distribution (without maps) to be found separately at the back of the book.
So far so good!
Unfortunately, while all this makes for a very interesting overview of the region's herpetofauna, the book's usefulness as an actual field guide is undermined by the fact that the illustrations are often too few, poor or inaccurate to let you identify even some very common species, and worse still, there are no keys provided to aid identification either.
For the Sunda subregion (Malay peninsula and the Greater Sundas), the more professionally compiled German language guide Amphibien und Reptilien Südostasiens. can be much more useful, with keys and distribution maps, and quality photos of most species.

Drawings are a bit consusing

It is great that such a book exists but (as an amateur) I had hard times using it to tell apart some species within same genera. The pictures are not very clear. Species descriptions do not offer sufficient tips on how to differentiate between similar species.

Much needed book

When Das showed the advanced copy at a herpetological meeting this summer, everyone's eyes lit up. This is a much needed book for the region and a reference I use quite frequently.

This book gives basic information about the species in Southeast Asia, and does a great job of providing the information needed for basic identification. Species lengths are included in the descriptions. Unfortunately there are no range maps - a bummer.

Novices using this book should also be aware that the large python plate numbers are labeled incorrectly. Hopefully this will be fixed.

I hope to see more from Dr. Das in the future. This is a great book, don't hesitate to buy it if you're at all interested in the region.

Best resource I've found for learning kanji

I have been living in Japan and taking spoken Japanese lessons ~2 hours/wk for one year, and about 2 months ago decided to pick up a few books to teach myself kanji. Of the 3 that I choose, this is the hands down, #1 best choice. Between the repetitive writing of the characters, compound kanji, reading comprehension & chapter tests, and self-print flashcards that come with the book, I can now read/write over 100 kanji and even more compounds and am well on my way to mastering all 200 in the book. I am actually now searching on Amazon to find volume 2 and am disappointed it doesn't seem to exist. In summary, I could not recommend this book more to anyone who wants to master the first series of kanji.

Great for Kanji practice, but...

Before I start, I will state that I am a student and have been studying Japanese a short while. I also realize this book is first edition, but bear with me. I bought this book because I have been looking for one that teaches Kanji and shows correct stroke order. I was extremely excited when I looked inside the preview on the Amazon page, and immediately ordered it. When I got it, I was amazed. It looks even better then on this page. I took out the CD and tested out what was on it, and sure enough it has flash cards as well as all the dialogue that is in the book.

There is a big BUT with all of this. A few things I am annoyed with:

1. This book does not show direction of stroke order. For those who know how important stroke order is, this was a major turn off for me.
2. I already know the numbers in Kanji, but decided to start from the beginning anyway. I am only up to page 16 and I have noticed TWO mistakes already. If you have or get this book, I'll point them out. The first mistake is on page 11, under the "questions" section. Number one has no correct answer. However, the correct answer is a choice on the CD. The second is when practicing the Kanji for "7" on page 16. They translate the number "nanajuu" as "seven" when it is in fact, "seventy". I, of course, do not know a lot of vocabulary and am a bit nervous that there might be other mistakes in this book and therefore learn incorrectly.
3. If you use the CD, the "readings" that come with each section aren't vocalized. It would be incredibly helpful to hear the reading as opposed to well.. Just reading it. The "readings" also appear as a picture and you therefore cannot copy it to have it translated elsewhere. It's really frustrating to have sentences thrown at you with vocabulary you might not have been introduced to yet, or if you're struggling with sentence structure.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. It does show stroke order (although, not direction). What I like most about this book is that it corresponds amazingly with the Genki book. It's almost in the same learning order. I would recommend other materials in addition to this book.

Awesome!

My 12 year old learned a little bit it kanji in history class and loved it. I bought him this as a gift, and he has had so much fun learning to read and write kanji. I was impressed with how quickly he started picking it up.
