Not so exciting.
By Kindle Customer
ok I read book one and loved it so I immediately added book two to my wish list. so when a friend gave me my gift card I ordered this book and couldn't wait to read it. Well I started reading and it was doing ok but I kept waiting for more. they dragged out the romance hinted at gang violence but never solved who broke in her home. had the twist of a murder but it was way to obvious. I felt like this was a basic novel with too many open ends and I lost interest. I did read the whole book in hopes of some thrills but just never got them. sorry I usually like this author but we'll this one is an exception.

I love the story. The characters were deep and flawed and enjoyed reading about them, seeing them work through their issues. The suspense and grand finale, everything was great.

Menage and Romantic Suspense
By Laura
Ms. Day blends a hot menage with some intriguing romantic suspense. The characters are likable and the whodunit kept me guessing until the end. Zoey was one lucky girl!

Even though I received this book for free for an honest review, I could not finish it. Too dark. Too much violence. Sorry, just not my kind of mystery. Actually, in five chapters I didn't get to a mystery.

The Doctor and the Detective: A Biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, by Martin Booth

This entertaining, smart biography of Arthur Conan Doyle presents a modern day interpretation of the man who, contrary to his best efforts, will always be known as the creator of the great detective, Sherlock Holmes. Doyle was, however, much more, as Booth shows us in this intriguing study of a man who thrived on the times in which he lived. While Holmes fans will be captivated by the various tidbits that offer insight into their hero's creation; others will be fascinated by this living embodiment of the Victorian masculine ideal.

Amazon.com Review
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in his autobiography: "I have had a life which, for variety and romance, could, I think, hardly be exceeded." In the years since his death, Doyle has been almost uniquely identified with his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, who remains among the world's most identifiable figures, fictional or real. Doyle was much more than the author of the Holmes stories, but his very success with the series has clouded nearly every attempt to address his life. Martin Booth's The Doctor and the Detective redresses the balance. It's the first full-fledged biography of Doyle, the first one not distorted by the lens of his Holmes stories. Through Doyle, it offers an entertaining vision of the Victorian values that underlie the stories, and it also illuminates the "variety and romance" of the author's life: as a military doctor, a war correspondent, a spiritualist, a cricket player, and a worker for social justice.

Booth begins with Doyle's grandfather, political cartoonist John Doyle, whom he sees as the pivotal fount of the family's artistic genius. He quickly moves through a description of Doyle's Jesuit schooling and his early talent for spinning stories. Later chapters examine his discovery of the short story through reading Edgar Allan Poe, his struggles and successes as his family's first medical doctor, and his eventual recognition of the need for a new kind of fiction with "a scientific detective, who solved cases on his own merits and not through the folly of the criminal." But, as Booth shows, the publication of A Study in Scarlet in November 1887 was not the defining event of Doyle's life. As the novella emerged and developed a small following, he entered politics and championed the Irish Liberal Unionist cause. That same year he began experimenting with telepathy and published his first letter in the journal of the London Spiritualistic Alliance. This latter interest would do as much as--if not more than--Holmes did to shape the rest of Doyle's rich life.

Doyle's papers, briefly available to scholars, were subsequently withdrawn. Studies based on those papers have been tightly controlled by the Doyle estate, so much of the most private material has never seen print. Despite that obstacle, Booth has done an excellent job of sifting through all of the public information about the author, his family, and his associates to assemble a highly readable, often entertaining narrative. What emerges is a portrait of a powerful man who helped define the character of popular literature in the 20th century. Booth's book will likely remain the definitive biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle until the author's papers are released in their entirety. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Publishers Weekly
Although the burly Edinburgh doctor who believed in fairies will always be linked with an angular, coolly rational English consulting detective, Booth (a Booker Prize nominee for Industry of Souls) is only one of many Sherlock Holmes fans and Arthur Conan Doyle biographers to try to separate the two. Booth's polished life appears in the U.S. after Daniel Stashower's lengthy, more authoritative work from earlier this year (Teller of Tales, Forecasts, March 15). While Booth lacks Stashower's thoroughness, he makes up for it in style and astute judgments on Conan Doyle's life and achievements. Conan Doyle grew quickly frustrated with the way his most famous creation eclipsed all else but could not do without him. Booth, a professed admirer of Holmes but not a Baker Street Irregular, investigates Conan Doyle and his creation with shrewd detachment, including the possible link between Holmes's cocaine habit and Conan Doyle's old medical partner. Conan Doyle's achievements minus the Great Detective would have been respectable: writing everything from serious historical novels to proto-science fiction, running for Parliament, serving in the Boer War, lobbying for such social reforms as divorce laws, investigating wrongful convictions, observing the front lines in the Great War, etc. While Booth often skims over interesting episodes as well as boring ones, his intriguing interpretation of Conan Doyle's gullible promulgation of "psychic religion," i.e. spiritualism, presents us not only with an industrious Victorian's attempt to situate his need to believe in the modern world but also with Conan Doyle's rationalization of his family's twin heritage of mental instability and creativity. From Library Journal
For Booth (Opium: A History), Conan Doyle is first and foremost a writer, whether of adventure stories, sf, detective stories, historical novels, essays, history, or journalism. Thus, he traces Conan Doyle's career far beyond Sherlock Holmes, offering the first full-length biography of him in 20 years. Because Conan Doyle's papers are currently closed, this biography is based on earlier biographies, supplemented by more recent studies that attempt to identify characters, look at Conan Doyle's interest in spiritualism, or examine his exploration of cocaine. As such, the book adds little new information on Doyle's life and work, and Booth is sometimes casual with his facts. (At one point he calls Edgar Allan Poe a "novelist," for example.) Still, this biography is an attractive and well-written introduction to Conan Doyle's body of work. Recommended for public and academic libraries.

Nicely Ties Together All Of The Strands
By Bruce Loveitt
This is a solid and very readable biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. All of the elements are here: growing up poor in Edinburgh, with a disillusioned, distant and alcoholic father and a strong and loving mother; going to medical school and getting started in a medical practice; his growing success as a writer of short fiction and historical novels; his first marriage, to a woman who developed tuberculosis early on and who died in middle age; Conan Doyle's falling in love, while still married to his first wife, with Jean Leckie, the woman who became his second wife (the relationship wasn't sexual until Conan Doyle's first wife died and he had married Jean); his fascination with, and public enthusiasm for, spiritualism. Some of the information presented is well-known, such as the interest in spiritualism and Conan Doyle's growing tired very early on with writing the Sherlock Holmes stories. But I'm guessing that, unless you are a rabid Sherlockian who has read tons of material on the creation and his creator, you will find much of the information the author presents to be interesting and fresh. Mr. Booth shows the adventurous side of Conan Doyle- his early hitch on a whaling ship and another trip, as a medical officer, on board a merchant ship which travelled down the western coast of Africa. We learn about the difficulties involved for a young doctor in setting up a medical practice. You had to spend money to make money, as the practice had to look like it was flourishing even though it was just getting started. With his limited funds, Conan Doyle did a nice job of furnishing his consulation room. He had to hang up a curtain, however, so patients couldn't see into the rest of the house- which was pretty much devoid of any furniture or decoration. We learn that Conan Doyle was physically fit and an avid athlete- playing cricket, rugby, soccer, golf, etc. Mr. Booth tells us of Conan Doyle's meetings with other writers, such as Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, and P.G. Wodehouse. While not a fan of Wilde's unorthodox lifestyle, Conan Doyle admired the man's intellect and work, and was charmed by his personality. (Both men were wined and dined in August 1889 by the editor of "Lippincott's Monthly Magazine," and agreed to write something for the magazine. Conan Doyle came up with "The Sign Of Four" and Wilde's entry was "The Picture Of Dorian Gray.") Mr. Booth sprinkles abundant examples of Conan Doyle's humor and with throughout the book- regarding the heat along the African coast,Conan Doyle remarked "(It was) hot enough to render the weight of a napkin upon your knee at dinner time utterly unbearable."; and on hitting upon Reichenbach Falls as the place to kill off his famous creation, Conan Doyle wrote "(It was) a terrible place, and one that I thought would make a worthy tomb for poor Sherlock, even if I buried my banking account along with him." Mr. Booth is very good at describing Conan Doyle's contradictions and character flaws: he was stubborn and would never admit he was in error about anything; he believed the white race to be superior to other races; he wanted to liberalize divorce laws to make it easier for women to obtain divorces, but he was vehemently against women being allowed to vote; he was extremely curious and adventurous- he embraced the newfangled motorcars when they first appeared and made an ascent in a balloon- but was very conservative in his attitude towards women ( he felt their job was to maintain the home and that they needed to be "protected") and he was horrified by any kind of modern art. Conan Doyle was very generous with his time and money. Throughout his life he wrote many letters and articles in support of causes he thought were right and on behalf of people he felt had been wronged, plus he put his bankbook where his mouth was. Many people know that Conan Doyle grew tired of writing the Holmes stories and had to have a lot of cash waved in front of his nose to convince him to bring the character back. What I didn't know, and which Mr. Booth explains, is that Conan Doyle was a prolific writer of short stories (horror, fantasy and science fiction) and historical novels. He wanted to be remembered for his historical novels- he did a lot of research and worked hard to make those books realistic. He gradually had to face the fact that posterity was going to remember him for Sherlock Holmes. (The money helped. It gave him a comfortable living and enabled him to support spiritualism and all of the other causes.) With all of the above going for it, you might wonder why I'm giving the book 4 stars rather than 5. There are 2 reasons. Although the style is fine and certainly not boring, things seem a bit hurried. An awful lot of material is crammed into 350 pages. And although we get a very good picture of Conan Doyle, the book is a bit weak on his relationships. We don't get to see much interaction with his spouses, children, friends, and colleagues. Still, this is a very good book about a man who was charismatic, energetic, funny and very interesting.

"He could be more humble, but there's no police like Holmes"
By A Customer
This biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tells that he was far more than the creator of "Sherlock Holmes". He was trained as an MD, and started writing to supplement his income. His literary skills brought him great wealth and fame. He had enormous self-confidence, the courage of his convictions, and was never afraid of controversy. He vigorously campaigned on behalf of prisoners wrongly convicted. This book is well worth reading about this paradoxical and versatile man.
His experiences in the Boer War showed him the British Army was antiquated and in need of immediate and drastic reform. The cavalry was outdated; artillery should be diversified and camouflaged; rifle drill was more important than parade drill. Officers should not wear distinctive uniforms, and should end their luxorious habits that made it hard for a poor man to accept a commission (p.237). He advocated a civilian military reserve of well-trained citizens, and nationwide rifle clubs. By 1906 there was a national federation of rifle clubs. The British won the Boer War thru a scorched earth policy, and placing Boer women and children in concentration camps. ACD defended the British in a pamphlet that was widely distributed. He was later made a knight bachelor and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Surrey (p.241).
ACD introduced Norwegian skiing to Switzerland in 1894 (p.172), memorialized in a plaque in Davos. When he visited America he just missed meeting Oliver Wendell Holmes, who he admired (p.200). He introduced golf to New England (p.201).
In 1886 he got the idea of writing about a detective who would solve cases by his scientific methods, and not by the folly of the criminal. He was inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Emile Gaboriau, and the vast number of murders and crimes reported in the national press. Page 107 discusses the possible origins of the names of his heroes. "Sherlock" is Old Norse for "fair-haired". Page 190 discusses the possible models for Moriarity. "Vintage Victorian Murders" by Gerald Sparrow (p.40) tells of a Sayers, the barrister who ran the London underworld for twenty years; his profession gave him the world's most wonderful cover.
ACD was raised as a Roman Catholic and educated in a Jesuit school. He later became an agnostic, then a believer in Spiritualism. G.K. Chesterton once remarked that a man who believes in nothing could wind up believing in everything.

Very readable story of a Fascinating Man
By A Customer
I must confess that I am not much of a biography reader, but the subject of Arthur Conan Doyle was too interesting to pass up. The Doctor and the Detective is highly readable, written in a comfortable style that is not just a recitation of facts and dates. Conan Doyle himself was a fascinating man of myriad interests and talents. I found myself breaking from my reading to share my amazement with anyone who would listen. Although I have read the complete Sherlock Holmes, this biography has inspired me to seek out The Lost World and other science fiction and horror stories written by Conan Doyle. My one minor criticism of the book is that the chronological sequence was sometimes difficult to follow because the chapters are arranged thematically rather than in strict time order. For example, information about Conan Doyle's medical career would be in one chapter and the development of Sherlock Holmes in another, but both chapters cover overlapping years and characters. Overall, I feel that I have gained an excellent sense of Arthur Conan Doyle as an individual and within the context of his world. I highly recommend this biography.

Review
"Cutter is my favourite Jackson brother. Big, bossy, strong, opinionated and loving... He's firmly at the helm of things in the Jackson empire, and everyonefalls in line quite nicely, thank you very much. Well, mostly." (Sharon, Australian Romance Readers Association feature review)

"Pro: Kelly Hunter book. Cons: ugh." (B+ from Bam Galace, The Good, The Bad, and The Unread) --My favourite book review ever. Clever, imaginative, rapier funny and deliciously critical.

From the Author
Hi Readers,

I was aiming for a particular kind of guy in Cutter Jackson. A man of easy confidence and a thorough awareness of what he brings to a relationship. He's easy on the eye and has a strong regard for family. He has a liking for women, and I mean that in the purest sense. He likes what they bring to his alpha-driven, physical world. He's open to them. And when finally he finds the one he wants, he's all in. I hope you like him.

I've one more book to write in this series--big brother Nash's story, and then it's done.

The Jackson Brothers
Book 1: The Courage of Eli Jackson (Previously titled The Honeymoon Trap. Publishers Weekly - one of the 20 Best Books of 2014)
Book 2: The Heart of Caleb Jackson (Previously titled Sympathy for the Devil. Romance Writers of Australia - ELLA Finalist 2015)
Book 3: The Downfall of Cutter Jackson (Previously titled A Bad Boy for Christmas)

From the Inside Flap
A guy walked beside him, same dark hair and rangy build as Caleb, same height, possibly a fraction taller. And when he turned towards them and Cutter got a load of his face--

Same face he saw every morning when he looked in the goddamn mirror.

"Who the hell are you?" Cutter watched in growing disbelief as his doppelganger spared a look for the woman in the doorway and with the slightest shift of his head, told her to get gone.

She didn't budge.

"My brother asked you a question." Eli broke the silence, his gaze fixed on the man at Caleb's side.

The man scowled and ran a hand across the back of his neck, and there was a gesture Cutter knew intimately. This--whoever he was--had Cutter's face and his habits.

"The name's Nash."

Even the voice was similar. Not quite as threatening as his. Maybe not quite as gruff.
And then the man lowered his hand and his gaze locked on Cutter.

"My name is Jackson Nash and I'm looking for my father. Anyone want to point me in Geoff Jackson's direction?"

Fist. Face. Even if it was his own face. Cutter started forward, only to be met by Eli's shoulder-check and a firm hand wrapped around his bicep.

"Does it look like he's lying to you?" Eli muttered, low and rough, before letting go and turning to face the bastard who went by the name of Jackson. "He's not here. He's not in town. He's in England."

Cutter heard a not-so-delicate snicker coming from over near the door, and spared a menacing glare for the redhead.

"Course he is," she murmured.

"You still haven't said who you are." Cutter's words were a writhing mix of anger and confusion and he didn't spare her any of it. Not as if she was being helpful.

"Me?" She made a show of pressing her hand to the sundress that barely covered her utterly perfect chest. "I'm Nash's sister."

No. Hell, no. "Lady, no one around here ordered a sister."

She moved, pure challenge as her hands went to her hips. Her breasts heaved and he really had to stop looking at them. "Well, you'd hardly order one the same way you'd order pizza, now would you?"

"I'm guessing she's not going to be one of those sweet, docile sisters who bakes cake and puts her brothers on a pedestal," murmured Caleb, with a darkly amused glance in her direction. "Pity."

Loved it!
By Carrie G.
Cutter, Eli and Caleb Jackson suddenly have their world turned upside down when out of nowhere a half brother they never knew they had, Jackson Nash, walks into their world looking for answers and to meet the father he never knew. Jackson could be Cutter’s twin so there is no doubt that he is who he claims he is. Coming along with Jackson for support is his foster sister Mia. When Mia and Cutter meet there is an instant attraction that the two try to push away for the sake of the family.

After thirty years of marriage though, the Jackson boys parents have gone to Europe for an anniversary trip. Not knowing when they’ll be returning Jackson and Mia stick around to get to know the family better and are soon welcomed by everyone while things begin to grow between Mia and Cutter.

A wonderful little story about family with great characters and an engaging plot. Not only do you have a lovely growing romance between Cutter and Mia but watching the family accept Jackson and Mia both after the world they came from with not having families was truly touching.

Great little novella, would definitely recommend.

Cutter and Mia just right for each other!
By PSusan
A Bad Boy for Christmas by Kelly Hunter concerns the third Jackson brother, Cutter Joe. I went back to look the first two brothers stories up since I did not remember the stories being listed as the Australian Jackson Brother Series. For those who may have been unaware of the other brothers’ stories they are: Eli’s – The Honeymoon Trap and Caleb’s - Sympathy for the Devil.

Cutter is the oldest of the brothers and finds love last of the three. It literally walks through the door with very unexpected news. Cutter has the oldest brother thing going on so he needs being put in his place sometimes. I love his relationship with his brothers’ wives and while it seems as if Zoey and Bree is doing a good job of this, Cutter needs true love not just sibling love. The banter between Mia and Cutter is sharp, witty and humorous. In fact, Mia can be a bit like sandpaper when she put her mind to it. I loved these two together, definitely two characters who belong with each other.

There is intrigue, love, and family loyalty. At times it is flirty and fun, other times poignant. All the time it is enjoyable.

The publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.

Crushing on Cutter
By Book Gannet
This is my first taste of the Jackson Brothers series, and I have to admit that at first I wasn’t convinced. Not because of Cutter, even if he is bossy and arrogant, but because of Mia. In the first chapter she goes out of her way to be irritating and annoying, and there was a moment when I very nearly put this book down.

Thankfully, I didn’t, because despite Mia’s wind-up ways, I really enjoyed this book. It’s full of fast, funny dialogue, some great sibling interactions and then there’s the whole issue with Cutter and his brothers having their whole world turned upside down by the arrival of Nash – a fourth brother, who’s also older.

I think this was what made me fall for Cutter, because he’s always been the older brother until now, when not only does he have to face the fact that there’s another brother out there, but one who is older than him, yet that doesn’t stop him from accepting Nash. In fact, the way he goes about dragging Nash into the family – and getting other members of the family to fall in line – is totally unsubtle, quite a bit bossy and pretty brash, but it shows how much he cares, and I loved that.

Mia is confident and strong-minded and rejects authority automatically, so on the surface she’s the complete opposite of what Cutter should want – and likewise, she shouldn’t want anything to do with him. Yet, somehow, they match perfectly. Once she stops acting like a child – or at least reveals why she’s acting that way – I liked her, and I loved how the pair of them interacted, both when they were trying to resist the attraction and afterwards.

Fast and fun with a nice touch of heat and plenty of family drama, I really enjoyed my first taste of the Jackson men, and it definitely won’t be my last. Luckily there are two previous novels to keep me busy while waiting for Nash’s book.

it's like an old friend's come back.
By A Customer
While I've never read this actual book, I 'have' read the individual comics that make it up. This was easily my favorite comic series growing up, and I'm always glad to get a few back issues of it added to my collection. The Power Pack was an elementry school students wish fulfillment, a bunch of ordinary kids suddenly gaining superhuman powers, and going on great adventures. I was saddened when they ended the series, but rumors have given me hope that the story of Power Pack has not ended.

A series of Community Service Announcement posters that I would love to see up around my town.
By Wayne A McCoy
'Live Life Sunny Side Up' by Jeremyville is a collection of that the artist would like to see as public service announcement posters around town.

First of all, I don't think the cover to this book does it justice. The art is colorful and cheerful and the messages are affirming. There are messages that chide, but in a bright, friendly way. We are encouraged to pay attention to today and spend more time with people and less time with our devices. We are encouraged to keep going, and to create by moonlight, and to imagine different tomorrows. This would be a fun book of perforated postcards that could be sent or tacked up. If it ever became a guerilla art movement, it would probably bring the kind of smiles that flash mobs did a few years back.

I think if someone had described the book to me I wouldn't have given it a shot, but I kind of stumbled into it and I really enjoyed it. I immediately recognized Jeremyville's style from some wallpaper I used and from some t-shirts on the Threadless.com site. His style is bright and a little weird, but completely fun. This would be a great gift book or something to leave out on a coffee table to look through when you're feeling down.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this really fun ebook.
