Disappointing

I ordered this book because it came highly recommended from women I trust. I later realized that they likely were promoting a friend and presumably had not read the book. The stories are ordinary, most are elementary, and they're written in "cutespeak." Most of the stories can be read in a minute or two, so there's no depth, and most feel manipulative. If you are at the very beginning of a spiritual quest, this book might be useful. If you've advanced a little along your path, you're beyond this book. If you're feeling despair and looking for some solace, this book might help, but there are many others that will serve your needs better.

I so enjoyed reading this uplifting book. It was an outstanding combination of inspiring stories and truly thought-provoking messages from a diverse range of contributors. In a world where crises rule the headlines and pessimism guides so many conversations, the opportunity to sit down with a book that explores the personal nature of spirituality is truly a treat. I found myself savoring each page and creating both an internal dialogue and sparking engaging conversations with others about the presence of God in our lives. With so many of my readers and clients seeking more depth in their spiritual journey, this will be a book I refer to them time and time again to confirm the very personal nature of spirituality and their relationship with God.

The beauty and mystery of the isolated, crumbling Spomeniks informs Kempenaer's enquiry into memory, found beauty, and whether former monuments can function as pure sculpture.

Under-appreciated masterpieces

Having grown up in that part of the world, I remember as a child being taken to "spomeniks" on school field trips. It is only as an adult that I have come to appreciate their artistic content and stunning beauty. They stand as commemoration to the all too many lost in war's fury, as reminders of the terrible toll that wars have taken in the Balkans. And yet they offer hope, showing that humans are capable of sublime expression in the face of immense tragedy. I applaud Jan Kempenaers's aesthetic vision, but lament that he has chosen to marginalize the authors of these masterpieces by treating them only as visual objects. But most of all, I lament that they stand in silent ruin today when their message is so desperately needing to be heard.

So close, but yet so far

The photos are glorious, but there is NO story behind the sculptures/memorials...no brief bit of history, nada. I was hugely disappointed. There REALLY needs to be an addendum to the book that actually talks about these things. As it is, it's just a collection of "the greatest hits" of each piece. I'm sure he has many different views. It would have been good to see more than one angle.

In short, the idea is fantastic. It just wasn't taken NEARLY far enough...and now that it's been done once, I doubt anyone will redo it, and do it properly.

Wonderful, spooky stuff

Buried in the back of this book, in fine print, is a detailed one-page explanation of how these monuments came to be. There is no mention of what they mean individually, and most of them look like they were built by aliens having a love affair with concrete. I don't buy photo books, but I saw this man's photos of spomeniks in a gallery, and I couldn't forget them. Finally I broke down and bought this book. I didn't regret it. I don't think you will, either.

Read This for Truth about Beauty Products

No More Dirty Looks The Truth about Your Beauty Products--and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics will be a real eye-opener for many readers unfamiliar with the dangers lurking in so-called beauty products.

The journey for the authors starts when they go to get a Brazilian Blow-Out and discover that formaldehyde is an active ingredient in the product. (Formaldehyde is used to embalm dead people, FYI and is considered a carcinogen.) From there, the authors begin research into all kinds of health and beauty products.

They discover that the FDA doesn't do a very good job in protecting the health of people. One of the most disturbing truths discovered is that endocrine disruptive chemicals are found in baby products and products pregnant women use.

What many people do not realize is that the skin is the largest organ and that it is porous. when you apply a products, it goes through the skin and into the bloodstream. All those chemicals found in makeup and perfume and inside your body! And there are literally 1000's of them.

The best art of the book is that safe and effective alternative beauty products are suggested. Ones that are also not tested on animals.

I have been using safe, chemical beauty products (and safe stuff for home, etc) for years now. I am familiar with many of the products suggested and YES they are effective! (Like anything else, you have to test and see for yourself.) Once you get used to these products, you will not miss the chemical-laden ones with their fake smells!

The reason for 4 stars? I was not pleased with the way this book was written at times, with way too casual words--as if these were two girls writing about some silly subject instead of the very serious subject matter that it is. It only serves to make one question their credibility....that said, I have done enough research to know they are on to the facts.

I also recommend IN DEFENSE OF FOOD by Michael Pollen to learn about healthy food( or any of his books,)HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET to discover how to detoxify all products you use AND find great, healthy alternatives, and HOW TO GROW FRESH AIR to clean your home of toxins.

This book changed my life

This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about health, beauty and the environment. I was shocked to learn about the cosmetic industry from up close and how little they are protecting my health. This book gave me all the info on the cosmetics I was using that were bad for me and then I got a bunch of ideas about how to change my attitude and my products. I have been using clean and natural beauty products since and my skin feels amazing and I feel better about the industry I am supporting. Great read, I'm giving it to all my loved ones.

not bad, could be better

pros:
1. easy to read/understand delivery. No technical jargon to wade through. Terms That the average person wouldn't know are explained in plain English.
2. Each subject (i.e. lotion, lipstick, acne cream, etc) has only a page or two to read through to get the relevant info.
3. Good organization of the information. I can find exactly what I want without wading through every thing I don't.
4. Good information. Helpful hints. Each chapter has the section "why these products are bad" followed by the section "here are products that are good and where you might find them to buy them, or how to make your own."
5. comprehensive in the types of products covered. Probably a majority I have never used, or only used once or twice in my life.
6. Also covers other ways of making yourself beautiful naturally, (i.e. good health, good lifestyle, etc.)

cons:
1. I found the use of swear words in the book to be flippant and unprofessional. While they don't occur all the time, I am one who believes that strong words should be reserved for special occasions where a strong impact is desired. That didn't happen here. There was no need, and therefore it came off as offensive rather than effective. There were also a few mild references to human sexuality that I thought didn't add to the book.
2.While it's nice not to have to read through a chapter for every cosmetic product, I felt like some things were kind of skimmed over and could have used more detail. In some places it felt more like an overview than a truly informative book. Once again, this is both a pro and a con.
3. I would have liked to see more "make at home" possibilities. Surely there's more out there that you can use to clean your hair than the old "baking soda and vinegar."
Also, they mentioned that Baby Soaps have these "bad" chemicals in them too but offered no alternatives for your little ones, nor discussed the effects of adult "clean" soaps for your little ones.

Over all I thought this book was worth the read, and the information presented was valuable.

"Nick Naylor had been called most things since becoming chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies, but until now no one had actually compared him to Satan." So begins the adventures of this protagonist, a shamelessly slimy yuppie and PR flack par excellence for the tobacco industry. The story, such as it is, consists of Naylor's attempts to prop up his failing corporate star by expanding his defense of the evil weed. Working the airwaves, he engineers successful, hysterical appearances on Oprah and Larry King , after which he's kidnapped by anti-tobacco terrorists who attempt to murder him by plastering his body with nicotine patches. As usual, Buckley's humor is over the top, although he doesn't exactly choose tough targets (his previous novel, The White House Mess , tackled the decline and fall of the Reagan/Bush dynasty). But the blatant immorality of Big Tobacco inspires some wonderfully comic vehicles, such as the delightfully morbid M.O.D. (Merchants of Death) squad, a semi-secret weekly lunch club that consists of Naylor and fellow flacks for the NRA and the alcohol industry. The silly plot sometimes gets in the way of the funny stuff, and it's far more entertaining to watch Naylor try to maintain his fiefdom and satisfy his libido amid the madcap spin control. Buckley is a smoother, funnier and more refined heir apparent to Art Buchwald's throne, and this book cements his position as the best up-and-coming political satirist on the literary map. Since the titles of so many books are mysterious or ironic, it is pleasant to come upon one that says exactly what it means. Nick Naylor is chief spokesperson for the Academy of Tobacco Studies and as such has the dubious honor of defending and promoting the rights of smokers at a time when they are accorded the same treatment lepers once were. Like most good romps, this one is sportive and whimsical on the surface, but it manages to let loose a roundhouse punch at the advertising industry and the vacuum at the heart of power. At one point, the joke wears a little thin and imminent tedium threatens, but thanks to the author's inventiveness, the novel's earlier zest is soon recovered, and the plot starts spinning merrily along once again. Buckley's prose is well behaved and his dialog brisk and lifelike. All in all, an amiable and worthwhile work from the author of the best-selling The Whitehouse Mess (Random, 1986) who is now an editor at Forbes FYI magazine.

Great satire, so-so thriller

Nick Naylor, the protagonist of Christopher Buckley's "Thank You for Smoking," gives new definition to the term "antihero." Despite his position, he's not really a bad guy. Sure, he makes six figures a year lying through his teeth as the chief lobbyist at the Academy of Tobacco Studies in Washington, but he's not really making anybody smoke cigarettes. As he explains it, he's just moderating between two competing groups, namely the cigarette companies and the anti-smoking zealots. Besides, someone's got to pay the mortgage and his son's prep-school tuition. Even he realizes that his rationalization sounds like something a Nuremberg defendant might say ("I vas only paying ze mortgage"), but it takes a certain courage to go on TV and say there's no demonstrable link between smoking and disease. Perhaps Buckley's greatest achievement here is that he can take a guy who lies to sell cigarettes and make him into a sympathetic figure.
Nick Naylor's life provides the basis for Buckley's often hilarious look at the "neo-puritanism" of mid-nineties America and the attempts of tobacco companies to fight it. And although I hate cigarettes, I think a book like this needed to be written. Anybody who's ever been repulsed by those ridiculous "Truth" ads where a bunch of obnoxious young people harass those who make and sell cigarettes should get a good laugh at Buckley's portrayal of the sanctimonious forces of political correctness. As Nick tells Oprah Winfrey in one uproarious scene, cigarette opponents aren't above manipulating children and trying to tell everyone else how to think. And anything that takes the wind out of the sails of political correctness is fine by me.
Much of the book's humor comes from Nick's lunch meetings with his friends in the Mod (an acronym for "Merchants of Death") Squad. Composed of Nick, alcohol lobbyist Polly Bailey, and one-armed gun advocate Bobby Jay Bliss, the Mod Squad is sort of a combination support group and mutual admiration society. In the presence of their own, the three death merchants can work on their PR strategies, discuss their latest misfortunes at the hands of the neo-puritans, and compare just how much death they've caused and how hated they are. In one particularly humorous scene, Polly and Bobby Jay are saying how much hate mail they get, and Nick just scoffs and says, "HATE mail? ALL of my mail is hate mail."
Of course, even satires need plots, so Buckley throws in some intrigue regarding a plot to have Nick killed. When a team of killers kidnaps Nick and covers him in nicotine patches, Nick finds himself suspected by the FBI of having done the deed himself as a PR stunt. In an effort to clear his name, Nick eventually traces the attempt on his life to a conspiracy in the upper levels of the tobacco lobby. Although this plot had possibilities, it felt somewhat underdeveloped to me. At a mere 272 pages, "Thank You for Smoking" isn't quite long enough to function effectively as both a satire and a thriller. The plot's pretty interesting, I just would've like to see a little more space devoted to it.
Still, this book is worth a read. It's fast-paced, well written, and remarkably perceptive. More than once I found myself laughing out loud at the absurdity of it all. If an avid non-smoker like myself can find himself rooting for a tobacco lobbyist, than anyone can.

Worth inhaling

I would have never guessed that I would even consider reading a book about a PR man for the tobacco industry ... and I certainly could have never imagined that if I did, I'd enjoy it so much!
I picked up Thank You For Smoking at the suggestion of a friend, and was pulled into the narrative immediately. The story is so tightly and entertainingly written that I practically inhaled it (pun intended), taking less than a day to finish the book's nearly 300 pages even though for the most part I had to read it a few pages at a time while working at a conference.
Author Christopher Buckley pulled off the seemingly impossible here: making a despicable protagonist like Nick Naylor seem sympathetic. I won't go into the way Mr. Buckley does it, but it is definitely worth finding out for yourself.
My only complaint is that the ending to the story wraps up a little too neatly, a little too much like Hollywood. It's a weakness, but not a serious enough of a weakness to cloud the value of this original and clever book.

Funny satire with a real bite on just about everyone

Christopher Buckley knows how to write satire that has a delicious bite along with the laughs. Nick Naylor, our protagonist, is a highly paid consultant for the tobacco lobby that is thinking about cutting back expenses because of their shrinking market and lack of success on the Hill. So, Nick decides on a plan to go on the offensive for the public mind and breath. Unfortunately for Nick, his new public notoriety brings attention from some folks who have a rather aggressive passion against smoking.

This book takes on everyone. Lawmakers, lawyers, lobbyists, amoral businessmen who don't care what they sell as long as they get rich, activists who are motivated by a lot other than their stated cause, media types, and the public. We all get it in ways that will make you say ouch and still find a laugh.

Good novel that has held up well.

After eight long years, British music historian Vernon Joynson, offers up this brand new revised and expanded version of his seminal work chronicling UK psychedelic and progressive music from 1963 through 1976. The new edition contains far too much information to be contained within a single volume. The result is this massive two volume, 2100 page tome published by Borderline Productions and is more than double the length of its 2006 predecessor, and triple the length of the original 1995 edition! This is no mere update, however, as many new features have been added, and each and every entry has been lovingly and meticulously rewritten. The resulting set indeed lives up to its lofty ambition of being "The Ultimate Guide To UK Rock & Pop Of The Beat, R&B, Progressive Eras 1963-1976."

So, what does the purchaser get in return for his or her hard earned currency? As with previous editions "Tapestry" consists of individual entries for each and every band or solo artist, presented in alphabetical order. The entries have, as the title implies, been painstakingly revised and expanded, greatly increasing their value to collectors and fans alike. In addition, hundreds of new entries have been added to this new edition!

What information is contained in the entries you may ask? First of all, an alphabetic list of personnel and the instrument or instruments they play. Where more than one lineup occurs, they are likewise listed alphabetically. The personnel information, in conjunction with the artist or band's album discography, indicates which album or albums (vinyl and CD alike), if any, the individual played on. The extremely detailed album discographies include the title of the LP or CD, the label and catalog number and the year of release. Where more than one has been released, they are listed in order of release. Compilation albums and CDs are indicated as such in the listing. Unlike previous editions comprehensive information about overseas issues and reissues is included, greatly expanding the discographies of many bands.

An exhaustive section devoted to retrospective compilations of artists' recordings is included where applicable. Detailed descriptions of the compilations (number of tracks, inclusion of essential recordings, rarities, etc.) are given as well as the title, label, catalog number and release date being included. Information regarding box sets and multi-disc releases are covered in this section with an emphasis on the most comprehensive releases available as well as comments on releases to be avoided or purchased with caution.

The extensively detailed discographies of EPs and 45s are listed in order of release, but unlike previous editions the EP discographies now include detailed track listings, and overseas as well as UK issues. The EP and 45 discographies also contain label, catalog number and year of release information, all absolutely essential information for collectors.

Without question the most important addition to this new edition is the "About The Band And It's Music" section which offers extensively detailed descriptions of the artist's sound as well as detailed analyses of the music and in many cases critiques which serve as an invaluable tool for collectors, aiding them in deciding which bands and/or releases they pursue. This addition alone may well be worth the cost of the book.

Following the tradition of previous editions the new two volume edition is profusely illustrated. Hundreds and hundreds of photos are interspersed throughout the text. Furthermore, each volume has an 8 page full color section devoted to album cover art.

Lastly, the UK rarity scale has been completely revised. LPs, EPs and 45s which are rare and sought after have been given a rarity rating. This scale acts as a guide to the value of particular releases and is yet another reference tool for collectors.

Great care has been taken by the author to assure the accuracy of each entry's contents. With a work of this depth and breadth quality control is of utmost importance. Having given the volumes a thorough examination I can attest to the accuracy and detail contained within the two volumes. It is at once quite obvious that this project is indeed a labor of love executed with incredible passion by the author.

The two volume "Tapestry Of Delights" is available in two formats. The softbound edition is available from both Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk and can be obtained in the US at a cost of $100 give or take, and in the UK for comparable prices. There is also a strictly limited, numbered (600 copies) hardback set which can be obtained from fine booksellers in the US and UK. The cost of the hardbound copies is approximately $250 plus shipping in the US and 100-125 pounds sterling plus shipping in the UK. I must add that the faux leather bound copies with gold embossed lettering are absolutely breathtaking!

To sum it up, "The Tapestry Of Delights" is, without doubt, the seminal work regarding psychedelic and progressive rock from the UK 1963-1976. It should be a mandatory part of any true record collector's library and essential reading for music collectors and fans alike. The only real question is whether to purchase the hardbound or softbound edition. You can't go wrong either way!

TRULY AN EXPANDED "TAPESTRY OF DELIGHTS"

This has obviously already been reviewed but this coffee table size, two volume set is just so good I had to say something about it. For fans and collectors of UK pop/rock/Mod/Beat/psyche/R&B/progressive/whatever, this will be one of the best additions to your music book library if you want information on UK bands from the best years of British music. The previous single volume editions of the book were great, but this surpasses earlier editions.

This edition is in two thick volumes with updated information on virtually countless bands and performers from the prime years 1963-1976. Rumor has it (I believe I heard it from the author himself on the internet) that this edition is to be the only double volume set--it is getting too expensive to keep publishing a book of this type in two volumes--so you might want to purchase this fairly soon.

Inside you'll (more than likely) find more information on a particular band/performer than you need--which is great. The vast majority of entries are accurate, but inevitably there are a few glitches--most of them minor--which doesn't affect all the work Vernon Joynson has put into it. There's b&w photos of various bands and record jackets throughout, plus eight pages of nicely done album covers in color in each volume--a nice touch.

Check the internet for the best price and availability--like Abe's Books or something similar and trustworthy. If you're a deep fan of UK music from the years stated above, this will be a book you will turn to again and again. I thought it would be a book I would use only occasionally, but was I wrong. This is a one-stop book for many little known albums/bands--many of which I like and search for. If you can swing the dollar outlay without too much difficulty (my wife gave me the "go ahead") this is something you should consider purchasing before it's too late.

And on a slightly different note--if you're into late '60s Haight-Ashbury (or were there) Jim Marhsall's new coffee table size book of period photographs of that scene is well worth your attention. I was lucky enough to be in college in Palo Alto in the late'60s/early '70s and this book brings back a lot of memories--good and slightly weird--of that whole time. But if you want just one book of photos from that period/area this is the one to purchase. Not only are the photos a great insight into that time, but the essays too are well written and add greatly to the overall quality of the book. Check it out.

Excellent resource for survivors of trauma and therapists

My interest in reading this book stems from the psychotherapeutic work I am currently doing (as a client, working with a psychotherapist) to remember my own childhood trauma and learn how to rework these memories into clear consciousness and healthier emotional responses. I have just begun this work and, as is my tendency, I went to Amazon to see what was out there that I could read to educate myself about what trauma is and, most importantly, how to heal it.

I highly recommend this book for both survivors of trauma and the mental health professionals who work with them.

I easily read this book during a long weekend. The text, although written by a mental health professional, is quite accessible even to the layperson, and has a number of examples throughout that are used to illustrate the author's points.

The book itself is divided into two main sections: Theory and Practice. Both are important to understanding the current ways we comprehend and treat trauma, based on the latest advances in the neurosciences that allow us to know better our own minds. Much of Rothschild's work hinges on the ways that the mind-body-emotions work together in experiencing, comprehending, and even storing in memory trauma that we experience. This is important, because the practice/treatment section of the book is also based on the same mind-body-emotions connection. So you must to some extent accept the mind-body-emotions framework to see the value of this book.

I do accept this framework, although not exclusively or primarily.

The second half of the book is equally rich and helpful, including a number of body-based (somatic) tools and techniques that anyone can use to begin to manage responses to trauma (and they are numerous and frequently very subtle) and then slowly start to examine the original sources of that trauma. Besides being based on or in the body, many of these techniques are also cognitive-behavioral in nature, so one must be willing to accept that set of theory as well.

Rothschild also goes into some detail about what somatic techniques can work immediately in the course of a therapy session, and these techniques could just as easily be used by the therapist as by the client. Since my therapist does not work much with somatic or cognitive behavioral techniques, I have asked that we do so, using some of the techniques in this book. (Yes, you can tell your therapist what will or might work best for you in the context of your therapy.) Equally helpful and insightful are sections that focus specifically on the interpersonal relationship clients have with their therapists in the context of therapy, a little discussed topic among professionals and never discussed among clients who often don't know what to expect during the course of therapy.

All in all, a good source of information for someone who is ready to face trauma in his/her life and wants some helpful tools for this journey.

After 26 years of thinking, "I should be over it", I now know its part of my body, not just my brain. I remember yelling out loud, THATS IT, and thinking I felt better immediately. I wasn't a loser, basket case mental job, but "my body remembers". I gave the book to my therapist, hoping she can help others. I actually contacted author to thank her, and she has a new book in the process. Thank you, Babette.........buy it, or I will let you borrow it:)
