Personal-finance guru Andrew Tobias slams online trading and praises the Roth IRA in his newly revised The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need. This investment bible remains as stimulating and meaningful as it was when it was first published 20 years ago. It's packed with ideas about stocks, living beneath your means, tax planning, retirement, and just about everything else in the financial world. And all of it is presented with Tobias's trademark brevity and ingenuity.

Last revised in 1995, the guide takes aim at a new game in town--online trading. By all means, use the Internet for buying a car or for research, Tobias says. But avoid cyberspace brokers, he says. Point and click enough and you will get slaughtered by commissions, spreads, taxes, and human nature. "It's so easy to click 'OK' a few times and make a $10,000 bet," he warns. "Look how mesmerized we become on a stool in front of a slot machine. Internet investing positively teases you to play." Tobias's favorite new entry is the Roth IRA, which allows you to withdraw your money tax-free when you retire. It's far better than a traditional IRA, he asserts. "Save yourself the trouble of agonizing over the choice and go with the Roth IRA," he writes. "Forget the worksheets." Sometimes caustic and always a skeptic, Tobias believes readers can shape their own financial futures. Just stick to the basics, he says. "By and large, you should manage your own money, via no-load mutual funds," he writes. "No one is going to care about it as much as you." It doesn't matter if it's 1978, 1998, or even 2008. Every three to five years, the financial reference industry's most modestly titled book gets a remodeling job, whether or not it is needed. Aside from his My Vast Fortune (1997), this is Tobias' annuity--and a true labor of love. How else could anyone explain the easy-going conversational style that lures the reader into a nodding complacency about a specific kind of investment vehicle until the three words, "don't buy them?" He succeeds in holding our interest precisely because the examples are pulled from real life, the same-old-same-old explanations (like compounding interest) are avoided, and he ruthlessly skirts platitudes. So his "trust no one" chapter begins with life insurance commercials and concludes with speculative can't-miss deals. A good place to start

This is a good book. Tobias' main point is that you need to start saving 10% of your income, and he also gives advice on ways to cut costs and where you can put your money. I've read a lot of investing books and some of what he said was not new to me. However, I did learn some new things. Some parts of the book that I found helpful were Chapter 5 which explains Treasuries (bills, notes, and bonds). I also liked his advice in Chapter 10 about what to do if you fall into a large sum of money (Lottery or inheritance). There are also some useful resources in the appendices in the back of the book such as contact info for discount brokers, mutual funds, a compound interest chart, and finally a quick summary of his main point (save 10% of your income). I gave the book four stars instead of five because I don't agree with ALL of his advice, for example I do not believe in purchasing rental properties (too big of a headache), and I think that home equity loans are a BAD idea. Other than that, a great book.

listen up kiddos, don't get too greedy

Andrew Tobias weaves through the dizzy world of T-bills, municipal bonds, alternative minimum taxes, and a host of esoteric personal finance topics. But the bottom line he preaches is simple: be happy living on less than you make, and save the rest in safe no load mutual funds, diversifying between domestic and international stocks. Tobias tries to assure most of us average Joes that we are a fool if we think we can outsmart the Warren Buffetts of the world, so don't go crazy speculating on individual stocks. At best, you will make a broker happy. At worst, you will lose your shirt. There now - I just saved you $14 you can add to your no load mutual fund account (lol).

Don't Buy a Boat

As a young and overwhelmed newlywed twenty-some years ago, I read The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need. It was clear, fun to read, and full of good advice. I was recently surprised to see it is still in print, revised and updated.

If you're already the sort of person who reads personal finance books, it won't be the only one you'll read, but it may be the one that holds up the best over time. Tips such as "invest" in staples such as coffee when they are cheap and ride out times of inflated prices by using your surplus are as useful today as they were in 1978. (Although if I remember, Tobias used canned tuna as the example in the earlier editions, and now uses cases of wine to illustrate the point.)

Tobias has updated the book to include investment advice that we never considered in 1978. He includes tips on how to find the best online air fares, when and when not to use eBay, TiVo, and reverse mortgages. He has some simple and effective ideas on how to make Social Security viable for the foreseeable future (without resorting to privitization). He gives specific advice to couples who are married and couples who aren't or who can't be.

One of my favorite sections is on what to do if you win the lottery. How many long drives have I passed by planning that very thing? (My first step: get an unlisted phone number.) Tobias's advice on this unlikely event is excellent, especially step 5b.) Don't buy a boat.

Amazingly compelling true story told in a very accessible format

'Operation Ajax' by Mike De Seve and art by Daniel Burwen is a fascinating read. It's also an app for the iPad, and I bet that it's a good one.

If you want to know why Iran has a hatred of the West, this book will clear it up for you. It tells the story of Iran, from the discovery of oil, up to the end of 'Operation Ajax' where Prime Minister Mossaddegh is ousted in 1953. We see first the UK, then the US playing politics with Iran with the hopes of securing oil. British Petroleum was founded based on this. We see the frustration on both sides, but we see the Iranian people being used as pawns to foment revolution and eventually a coup. The story would be a fascinating fictional thriller, but it's all true.

What a compelling way to tell the story. Using a graphic novel this way brings in non-historians and students and presents a story that comes alive. I knew about some of this, but I appreciated the chance to learn more. It's no wonder our relations with Iran and it's people are so shaky even to this day.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Verso Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Absolutely THE most incredibly mind-blowing history lesson I've ever experienced. Period

I was THOROUGHLY blown away by this book. The fact that it was ENTIRELY based on, and is what amounts to a true retelling of, actual events that have since impacted the entire world as we know it, makes it even more incredible to me. This was indeed a case of "stranger than fiction" and I found myself flabbergasted at the sheer magnitude of deception and the lengths our country and others would/will go to in order to secure their own ends.
It reads like a Hollywood plot, only all of it actually happened. What's more, actual photo-copies of the now de-classified files all of it is based on are included in the book. I'm not one for spoilers and long-winded reviews that are actually cliff-notes of an entire story so I'll leave it at this. If you enjoy good art, good storytelling via sequential art as the medium, and you think you might be interested in learning about a HUGE moment in the completely sordid history of our involvement in the destabilization of the middle east- look no further.
This book is incredible from start to finish.
The pacing, the artwork, the frames, the coloring.. all are top-notch.
It held my attention throughout, creating art out of a history lesson and educating me while holding me spellbound.
I'd go so far as to recommend it to history teachers [if they're interested in teaching actual history].

If you think you understand the Middle East, but you don't know the story of Operation Ajax, then you probably don't actually understand the Middle East. This gorgeous, complex graphic novel expertly tells the little-known true story of a CIA operation which essentially overthrew the democratically-elected government of Iran in the 1950s.
It's an utterly-engrossing, masterfully-woven tapestry of intrigue, conspiracy, politics, ambition and avarice laid out across the globe.

This is a brilliant, important book, and I, quite simply, cannot recommend it highly enough!

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

An essential guidebook to understanding Rudolf Steiner's six basic spiritual exercises

Rudolf Steiner described a group of six spiritual exercises in many different places in his writings, each time in a fresh way. He gives a brief outline of them at one point in his book How To Know Higher Worlds. He also describes them over the course of a few pages in his book Outline of Esoteric Science. And he describes them in detail over several pages in a book called Esoteric Development, in the chapter called General Requirements/Guidance in Esoteric Training. Aside from those classic locations, Steiner commented on the six exercises in many other places throughout his works.

In Six Steps in Self-Development, an incredibly convenient book, the editors gather into one 75-page paperback virtually everything Steiner said about the six exercises, including comments of his I had never before seen, though I'm acquainted with a great deal of Steiner's writings and lectures. For those who wish to understand as precisely as possible what Steiner intended by the six exercises, Six Steps in Self-Development is a tremendous help, particularly because it affords one the means to compare various descriptions Steiner gave. When compared, the various descriptions sometimes clarify each other. Also, new details emerge in each description Steiner gives, further illuminating what Steiner had in mind.

The book gives each of the six exercises its own section. For example, in the section about the thought exercise, just about everything Steiner said about that exercise is gathered. Giving each exercise its own section seems like the right way for the editors/compilers to have gone about it. That format however means that the editors necessarily had to split up into six parts some of the descriptions Steiner wrote about the exercises.

In each of the three books I mentioned above in my first paragraph, there comes a point where Steiner explains all six exercises together, as an undivided whole. He doesn't give each exercise in its own separate chapter. And it's essential to see how Steiner weaves the six as a single fabric.

But even though Six Steps in Self-Development divides the six exercises into separate chapters (and that was probably the best arrangement, given the book's purpose), it too is essential and extremely useful for the serious practitioner, because it so conveniently gathers everything Steiner said on the subject. Ideally, one should get Six Steps in Self-Development AND also read the unsegmented form of the descriptions to be found in the books mentioned in the first paragraph of this review.

About the Author
Tony Adams was born in 1966 in Romford, Essex. He signed for Arsenal as a schoolboy in 1980. At just 17 years and 28 days, he made his Arsenal debut, the second-youngest player ever. His full England debut came in 1987, when he also became club captain. He has won three League Championship medals, an FA Cup and European Cup-Winner's Cup medal, captained his country, and was three times Arsenal Player of the Year. Ian Ridley is football correspondent of the Observer, having previously written for the Independent on Sunday. He is the author of Cantona: The Red and the Black and Tales from the Boot Camps with Steve Claridge.

Great Insight into the mind of a Legend

The book was a great read. I revere Tony Adams as a player and captain. Certainly for me the best captain to lead the arsenal. This book offers a great insight into his life and mind and his troubles dealing with fame, rejection and football. What this book again reiterates is that everyone is insecure and it's important to learn how to deal with it.

Traces his life from his childhood to winning and lifting trophies with the Arsenal. Lot of good photos in there, small anecdotes which give you an insight on how deals were struck more than 10 years ago.

As a club arsenal need to bring him back into the fold, i'm sure his wealth of experience and knowledge should help our shambles of a defense out.

An American disabuses himself of some culinary prejudice

I was sitting in a bar one night reading a copy of Jane Garmey's Great British Cooking (another very good book) when a woman of obvious British extraction came up to me and asked, "Is there really any Great British Cooking?" An interesting question, I thought... Ms. Garmey actually did a pretty good job of making it clear that there was. This book goes much further, though, and should I think be required reading for anyone who wants to know what British food is really all about. (Note: I've not been to the UK, though I'd like to. But I figure the BBC's poll results are about as close as I can get for the time being.)
First off, it's an excellent deal -- the US price of $$$$ is only a dollar or so more than the UKP12.99 cover price. It's a fairly typical British television cookbook, impeccably laid out with near-pornographic food shots and a mouthwatering cover picture of the iconic British quickie dinner, fish and chips, newspaper and all. It's a slim book, with just over a hundred recipes divided into ten categories, including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Convenience, Outdoor, Party, Comfort, Tea, Festive, and even Food of Love (chocolate gets heavy play here). The book revels in its demographic data, showing differences between male and female tastes as well as regional flavors.

Surprises abound. The convenience food chapter is utterly dominated by Indian and Chinese dishes, as might be expected, but Fish and Chips is the #1. American favorites like doughnuts (said to be a teatime favorite in Wales), brownies, and chili (percieved as a Mexican dish) appear all over the book as well. Scones and clotted cream are tops in the tea category, but some old standbys like steak and kidney pie don't even rate in the top ten of the dinner category. The surprise favorite dinner: Spaghetti Bolognese, an oddity that perhaps reflects the more cosmopolitan tastes of a wired voter base.

The recipes are by and large hip updates to tradition; the scones have a twist of lemon zest, while the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding includes a red wine gravy (a favorite in my house for a few years) and mustard-and-thyme Yorkies. A hamburger recipe transforms the humble burger into lavash-wrapped kofta patties. Bangers and mash gets a hard cider and leek gravy. (A special word must be set aside for the rather uncategorizable (and probably indigestible) "Sausage, Bean, and Egg Bake with Oven-Baked Chips", a peculiar perversion of the classic English breakfast presented primarily as a hangover cure. Your guess is as good as mine as to exactly what that word is.)

This is a book that reveals a culture that may have perhaps gone a bit over the edge with food, but has definitely come to terms with and thoroughly overcome its reputation as a culinary wasteland. To read this book is to see a Great Britain that has learned how to eat, and how to appreciate the blessings of a multicultural heritage at the table (if, perhaps, not in other ways just yet). It's not perfect -- food writer Nigel Slater, author of the foreword, expresses skepticism at some of the outcomes of the poll, which I believe can be explained by the Internet-centered nature of the poll. However, though it's a tough book to find in the US, but it's not an expensive one, and very much worth the trouble to order.

About the Author

W. Warner Burke (Ph.D, University of Texas at Austin) is the Edward Lee Thorndike Professor of Psychology and Education, coordinator for the graduate programs in social organizational psychology, and chair of the Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. He is also co-director of the master of arts program in organizational psychology jointly conducted with the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. Dr. Burke earned his BA from Furman University and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to Teachers College, he served as chair of the Department of Management at Clark University, head of management programs and organization development at the NTL Institute, and executive director of the OD Network. Dr. Burke's consulting experience has been with a variety of organizations in business and industry, education, government, religion, and medical systems. A diplomate in industrial/organizational psychology and in organizational and business consulting from the American Board of Professional Psychology, he is also a fellow of the Academy of Management, the Association of Psychological Science, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and he was editor of both Organizational Dynamics and the Academy of Management Executive. He has written more than 200 articles and book chapters in organizational psychology, organization change, and leadership and has written, collaborated on, or edited 19 books. He has received numerous awards, including, in 1989, the Public Service Medal from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; in 1990, the Distinguished Contribution to Human Resource Development Award; in 1993, the Organization Development Professional Practice Area Award for Excellence―the Lippitt Memorial Award―from the American Society for Training and Development; the distinguished scholar-practioner award from the Academy of Management; the distinguished contribution to practice award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology; and lifetime achievement awards from the OD Network and Linkage, Inc. His most recent book, co-edited with Dale Lake and Jill Paine, was Organization Change: A Comprehensive Reader (2009).

comprehensive text on change

So much of the literature on change is often a simplistic cookbook claiming change can be executed in 7 easy steps. Burke provides the reader with the theoretical background and takes one through the multiple considerations when executing organizational change. I applaud Dr Burke for revealing the complexity of change and providing insights into the practice of change management.This is a primer for all who are engaged especially in large scale transformational change as it clearly provides one the background to help one educate others on why the change agent does what she does.

A solid foundation book for the field of Organizational Change

In Burke's Organization Change Theory and Practice the author provides us with a solid base of understanding of the nature of organizational change and the leadership needed to shepherd change through to a successful completion. In the book Burk provides and overview of organizational change, defining the differences between evolutionary and revolutionary change, and how it applies by looking at real world examples. He also discusses the nature of change and goes into both theoretical and practical approaches in a variety of situations.

This edition has been updated to cover transformational leadership. I the additional chapters the author identifies roles and responsibilities that are important to instill in developing the leaders. Burke covers what he feels are eight areas important to shepherding the change process through the prelaunch, launch and post launch phases of any size change initiative.

All throughout the book the author cites the large body of previous work that this book is built on, making it a fantastic reference for those who may wish to delve further into the theory and practice of organizational change.

Now in a completely updated and significantly expanded second edition, "Organization Change: Theory And Practice" by W. Warner Burke (Edward Lee Thorndike Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also serves as the Chair of the Department of Organization and Leadership) continues to be esteemed and recommended as a graduate school level text for university course work in the disciplines of industrial psychology, business administration, and organizational behavior. An invaluable resource for understanding and analyzing organizations be they corporate, governmental, or academic, this edition of "Organizational Change" is enhanced with a new chapter on 'Transformational Leadership' covering the fundamentals of leadership compared with management, transformational leadership, and the roles/responsibilities of the change leader. Also of note is the illuminating discussion on theories for understanding organization and change; as well as the evolutionary and revolutionary aspects of organization change. Professor Burke analytically discusses the nature of change and how organizational change is initiated by changing behavior, but not (as is commonly supposed) changes in mental sets or attributes. Enhanced with the inclusion of theoretical and illustrative models, as well as a model of meticulous and articulate scholarship, "Organizational Change" should be a part of every academic library reference collection and is especially recommended reading for students of the role of leadership in organizational evolution.
