Biopunks, as defined by AP science and technology reporter Wohlsen, are part of a loosely knit, multifaceted movement to find ways to permit people to engage in DNA research without the restrictions and costs imposed by the scientific and medical establishment. Practitioners, some self-taught, set up shop in their kitchens or garages, believing that significant biological advances are more likely to occur as more people get involved in the enterprise. For the most part opposed to intellectual property rights, they prefer the open-source model used to design some computer software. Although biopunks have not yet made any significant scientific advances, they view themselves as "simplifying and domesticating" biology. Though his prose is a bit dry, Wohlsen introduces some fascinating, altruistic individuals, people who would like to fight disease without profit as their primary motive. While Wohlsen conveys, and seems to share, their excitement, he provides little critical commentary on their prospects for success. He also splits his attention between true DIYers and others who are working outside the scientific establishment because they haven't been able to find jobs or funding. Great raw material but could have been organized and written better

"I was excited to read this book since I am very interested in bioinformatics and punk (although the book has nothing to do with punk music). Although I wouldn't call myself a practitioner of do-it-yourself (DIY) biology, I do work for a very entrepreneurial bioinformatics and software company. The general theme of Biopunk by Marcus Wohlsen, is that we are arguably reaching a point in biotechnology similar to where computing technology was in the 1970's. That is, where the germ of successful companies can grow out of innovations by a handful of people working on a shoestring in garages and basements. Think about Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak starting Apple in their garage, or Bill Gates and Paul Allen starting Microsoft while barely 20 years old. The point, echoed by many of the people who show up in the book, is that until recently biotechnological innovation has been only accessible to scientists at commercial companies or in academic labs.

Biopunk has tons of good raw material and no end of interesting stories (bridges made of trees, a lab engineering bacteria to produce malaria medicine, etc.) but not all of them seem relevant to the main thrust of the book (that malaria lab is a commercial ones, not DIY). If Wohlsen had expanded his book to cover more territory and taken more care to weave these stories together, it could have been a powerful summary of current trends and future predictions in biotechnology."

Science at the Kitchen Table

This is a great book for anyone who has an interest in science, or wants to see advances in medicine at greater rates that we've seen them so far. You don't have to know science to read this book. It is written so that people with no scientific background can understand the science. If you've got a teenager with an interest in science, you should have them read this book. It will inspire them to broaden their horizons beyond the typical research lab.

Tremendous Introduction

A tremendous introduction to one of the most exciting branches of individual superempowerment emerging today. The book is structured around the key figures in this movement today, and tells their stories quite well. It's not an exhaustive academic tome and doesn't try to be (appropriately so). I started out pretty familiar with this subject matter (having done much of the same research myself, including interacting with some of the people in the book), but learned a few things and `met' some very interesting people along the way.

Marcus Wohlsen does a great job laying out the contours of the movement. You get the culture, the philosophy they build on, the historical backing for their work, where they currently stand (without some major leaps, there's not a big chance of anyone solving cancer in their home wetlab) and where they're possibly headed. He also addresses the security threat (of course there is one, but the problem is social deviants, not these DIY garage hackers of living things).

Overall, it becomes clear that the most interesting times for biopunk are ahead. They're limited by a lack of cheap toolkits, good enough processes, funding, and knowledge. As they accomplish more over the coming years, they're going to have to deal with regulation and taking things to market. It's an interesting frontier and Wohlsen does this justice.

Fantastic reference for any electrochemist. This book does a good job of giving broad definitions of nearly every electrochemical term I can think of. It doesn't have everything, but it comes very close!

Collection of fun and simple projects for Arduino

What a fun book! I really enjoyed this book. I've only built two of the nine projects so far but both worked great and they were very straightforward. Ideally I'd give the book 4.5 stars because I do think the projects could use a little more "why" and I'm guessing folks not experienced at building projects like these might struggle with the assembly on a couple of the projects but both of these are very minor issues, hence deciding to go with five stars instead of four. All in all a great collection of fun projects that, more importantly, leave you with a great cookbook of code and examples that can easily be expanded on with personal experimentation. Highly recommended if you are looking for fun projects to build with Arduino.

OMG YES!

I am just about halfway done with the book and I just have to say, it has to be one of the funniest books I've ever read! The book starts out kind of slow and introduces the reader to Shane's childhood, his relationship with his brother, and his battle with his sexuality. 5 stars for the content. It later starts to pick up and we learn about his adolescent awkwardness and his college stories. Now, about the actual printing and shipping of the book: My book arrived in a yellow Amazon envelope slightly crushed and bent, and upon reading the book, there seem to be black dots on certain pages. C'mon Amazon! But anyway, this is a great book!

I've watched Shane on YouTube since 2010 and I blame him for my sense of messed up humor and I wouldn't have it any other way. So when Shane wrote this book I preordered it immediately and I'm so happy I did.This book will make you laugh and teach you to stay humble. As soon as I got it in the mail I couldn't put it down! It distracted me from my anxiety and kept me smiling and laughing. I really recommended this book to anyone with a messed up sense of humor or if you're looking for a quick laugh.

Relatabe, self-depricating and humorous

There's more self-deprecating humour where that came from! I rarely, if ever pre-order books, but l pre-ordered It Gets Worse by Shane Dawson on the basis of how much l enjoyed his first book. Shane was one of the first YouTubers l truly paid attention to. He has become synonymous with the very word "YouTuber". I found Dawson to be very relatable and engaging in his New York Times best seller I Hate Myselfie and by the end of the book l found myself wanting more. Well, more has arrived in the form of Shane's new volume, It Gets Worse.

Despite it's rather depressing title, it is not a negative book and it offers a glimmer of light for all struggling teenagers. While l can't relate on a personal basis to every (or even most) events described by Shane, he has the ability to be personable and connect with his audience. As proven with his first volume, his ability to reach his audience begins, but doesn't end behind a computer screen. Dawson is witty, charming and displays surprising dept. He's watchable but also happens to be highly readable as well. Whether it's stories of his family pretending to win the lottery or a difficult heartbreak, the book is hard to put down.

I must say l like Shane's second book more than the first. While l Hate Myselfie was a funny collection of first experiences and essays of embarrassing stories, It Gets Worse picks deep at the metaphorical scabs on the YouTuber's skin. We find here a more mature Shane Dawson —that's not to say he gets all philosophical on us plans to stop making Galaxy videos— he's just more comfortable with himself and aware. There are some darker moments and references to suicide and Dawson wanting to die as a teenager, but those are not including for comedic purposes. They are honest thoughts he had as he went through adolescence. The beloved YouTuber has won his battle with depression and perhaps his tale can inspire his following. When Shane tackles his confused feelings about his own sexuality, unrequited loves and life lessons learned he allows himself to be completely exposed.

Most adults would likely gain very little from reading It Gets Worse as they may not completely grasp Shane's brand of humour. l believe reading about these experiences can be truly beneficial for a teenager going through the hardships that come with adolescence. It gives them a sense of understand and tells them that they are understood. Besides, it's not all gloom and doom, there are some laugh-out-loud moments in these pages!

For the record, I'll still watch every Galaxy video you make Shane. 4/5 stars.

This book is a real gem. It provides real work situations and experiences that people (specially People Managers) come across on a daily basis and how they can and should deal with them.

Leadership guideline at any level...

I got promoted a year ago, at the age of 30 and working abroad in a multinational company. I needed a roadmap on my new journey into leadership and I found this book. Simple yet sophisticated, explaining the golden rules of leadership through three stages. The foundation, the practise and mastering the leadership. The part one; the foundations of leadership helped me understand why I got promoted among others. The part two; the practise of leadership is my current recipe to do my leadership job and the final part; mastering the leadership provides me with understanding how I can proceed further in my journey. During my first months, I had to face a critical leadership incident that many managers face once or twice in their journey in my company and the book gave me the guidelines on how to manage the case. If you are new to leadership or you think you have a stagnation after many years in that role, then read this book. I hope there will be a kindle version as well so I can have the book with me easily anywhere I travel.

I have reviewed a number of books on pain-and read many more. This book strikes me as a resume for the editors and the article authors-but it doesnt strike me as a sincere effort to help those with fibromyalgia. It provides only the usual superficial treatment by those with a medicocentric viewpoint- despite having chapters on lifestlye and nutrition-for it is clear the authors believe that fibrmyalgia is essentially characterized by pathophysiology. Interestingly enough- even the definiton of fibromyalgia has changed since the authors wrote this book- for now it is believed fibromyalgia is not a musculoskeletal problem- but a neurocentric problem- faulty brain processing.
Needless to say this book is written for people in medicne- and not for people with fibromyalgia. The authors epistemic community doesnt brook any doubt as to the soundness of their approach- and this is seen thruout the book. My guess is the chapter authors and the editors havent done much exploring beyond the medicocentric reductionistic, modernistic paradigm,
So if your a tru believer in medicine- then this book offers a cursory review of medical approach to fibromyalgia. If you really care about people with fibromyalgia- this book is of questionable value.
